It’s a staple for meals and lunchboxes!
Ingredients- 2 sheets of square fish cakes
- 1/4 onion
- 9 cm green onion (scallion)
- 1/2 Tbsp sesame seeds
- 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
- 2 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1/2 Tbsp cooking wine (mirin or similar)
- 1/2 Tbsp plum extract
- 1/2 Tbsp vinegar
- 4 Tbsp water
- 1/2 Tbsp sugar
- 1 Tbsp cooking oil
- A little bit of chili pepper (optional)
- A pinch of black pepper
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, cut the square fish cakes in half, then into bite-sized pieces. Cutting them into about 2-3 cm pieces will make them easy for everyone to eat.
Step 2
Peel the onion and slice it thinly. If slicing thinly is difficult, you can use a mandoline slicer.
Step 3
Cut the green onion into 9 cm lengths, then slice them finely. Using both the white and green parts will add more flavor.
Step 4
If you’d like a bit of spiciness, cut the chili pepper in half, remove the seeds, and mince it finely. You can omit this or adjust the amount if serving to children.
Step 5
Now, let’s make the delicious seasoning sauce that will determine the flavor of your braised fish cakes. In a bowl, combine 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic, 2 Tbsp soy sauce, 1/2 Tbsp cooking wine (or mirin), 1/2 Tbsp plum extract, 1/2 Tbsp vinegar, 4 Tbsp water, and 1/2 Tbsp sugar. Mix well until the sugar is dissolved.
Step 6
Heat 1 Tbsp of cooking oil in a pan over medium-low heat. Allowing the pan to heat up will help the seasoning distribute evenly.
Step 7
Add the chopped chili pepper and green onion to the pan. Stir-fry over low heat for about 1 minute until fragrant. The vegetables’ aroma will infuse the oil, making the dish even more delicious.
Step 8
Next, pour the pre-mixed, delicious seasoning sauce into the pan.
Step 9
Once the sauce begins to simmer, add the sliced fish cakes and onion. Stir-fry together. It’s best to cook over medium heat rather than high heat to prevent the sauce from burning.
Step 10
Continue to stir-fry for about 2-3 more minutes, or until the onion becomes translucent and the fish cakes are well-coated with the sauce. Be careful not to overcook the fish cakes, which can make them too tough.
Step 11
Just before turning off the heat, sprinkle in a pinch of black pepper and add 1/2 Tbsp of sesame seeds for a nutty flavor. Adding sesame seeds at the end preserves their fresh, nutty taste.
Step 12
Transfer the well-braised soy sauce fish cakes to a serving container. Your delicious, rice-topping side dish is now complete!
