  • Occasion : Everyday
  • Cooking : Braise
  • Servings : 1 serving
  • Cooking Time : Within 15 minutes
  • Difficulty : Beginner

Main Ingredients

  • 12 medium-sized fresh shrimp
  • 10 whole garlic cloves
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp corn syrup (or rice syrup)
  • 1 Tbsp plum extract

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare your thoroughly washed whole garlic cloves. Heat 1-2 tablespoons of cooking oil in a frying pan over low heat. Add the garlic cloves and sauté gently, allowing their aromatic flavor to infuse the oil. Be patient and cook until the garlic is fragrant but not burnt. This slow infusion is key to the dish’s depth of flavor.

Step 1

Step 2

Once the garlic is lightly golden and fragrant, it’s time to add the braising liquid. Pour in 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of corn syrup (or rice syrup), and 1 tablespoon of plum extract directly into the pan. If you prefer a saltier taste, feel free to add a little more soy sauce.

Step 2

Step 3

Add the prepared shrimp to the pan. Gently toss the shrimp to coat them evenly with the sauce. This step ensures each piece of shrimp will absorb the delicious flavors as it cooks.

Step 3

Step 4

Now, pour in 1/3 cup (approximately 60ml) of water. Cover the pan and reduce the heat to medium-low. Let the shrimp simmer, allowing the sauce to penetrate deeply into the shrimp. Flip the shrimp occasionally to ensure they are evenly coated and cooked through, and to prevent the sauce from sticking or burning. This simmering process melds the shrimp’s natural sweetness with the savory glaze.

Step 4

Step 5

The dish is ready when the liquid has reduced to a glossy, rich glaze that coats the shrimp beautifully. Keep an eye on the heat to prevent the sauce from becoming too dry or burnt. For an extra touch of aroma, you can drizzle a little sesame oil just before serving. Serve hot over a bowl of steamed rice for a truly satisfying meal!
