Sweet & Tangy Blanched Onion and Chive Salad Recipe – A Perfect Side Dish for Kids!

This blanched onion and chive salad is bursting with a refreshing, slightly pungent, and sweet flavor that will make you want to eat it with every meal! Main Ingredients
  • 200g Chives
  • 1/2 Onion (approx. 80g)
  • 1/2 Carrot (approx. 60g)
  • Pinch of salt (for blanching)

Seasoning Ingredients
  • 1.5 Tbsp Water
  • 4 Tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 2 Tbsp Minced Onion
  • 2 Tbsp Ground Toasted Sesame Seeds
  • 2 Tbsp Plum Syrup (or honey/sugar)
  • 2 Tbsp Sesame Oil

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, wash the chives thoroughly and cut them into 4cm lengths. Peel the onion and thinly slice it into matchsticks. Prepare the carrot by also cutting it into thin matchsticks. Slicing them thinly will help the seasoning penetrate well and improve the texture.

Step 2

Place the prepared chives in a colander. Pour about 2 cups of boiling water over the chives to quickly blanch them. This process wilts the chives slightly while maintaining their crispness and removing any unpleasant raw smell.

Step 3

In a large bowl, combine all the seasoning ingredients: 1.5 Tbsp water, 4 Tbsp soy sauce, 2 Tbsp minced onion, 2 Tbsp ground toasted sesame seeds, 2 Tbsp plum syrup, and 2 Tbsp sesame oil. Mix them well to create the dressing. Add the blanched chives, sliced onion, and carrot to the dressing and gently toss to combine. Your delicious blanched onion and chive salad is ready! Avoid over-mixing, as it can make the chives mushy. This salad can be enjoyed immediately or chilled in the refrigerator.
