Rice Ball Ingredients
  • 1.5 cups cooked rice (approx. 300g), warm
  • 1 can (approx. 150g) tuna, drained
  • 1/4 small onion
  • 2 Tbsp mayonnaise
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil
  • 10g seasoned seaweed (about 20 sheets)
  • 1/4 Tbsp salt (omit if using seasoned seaweed)
  • 1 Tbsp sesame seeds

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Finely mince the 1/4 small onion. Soak the minced onion in cold water for about 10 minutes. This step helps to mellow out the onion’s sharp flavor while retaining its crispness, enhancing the overall taste of the rice balls.

Step 2

Drain the canned tuna (approx. 150g) thoroughly using a sieve. Press gently with a spoon to remove as much oil as possible. Removing excess oil is crucial for a less greasy and more refined flavor in the rice balls.

Step 3

Remove the soaked onion from the cold water and pat it completely dry with paper towels. Ensuring the onion is dry is important to prevent the rice from becoming mushy. Press down firmly to absorb all residual moisture.

Step 4

In a large bowl, combine the warm cooked rice (1.5 cups, approx. 300g). Add the drained tuna, the dried minced onion, 2 Tbsp of mayonnaise for creaminess, and 1 Tbsp of sesame oil for added aroma. Gently mix all ingredients using a spatula or spoon, being careful not to mash the rice grains. Mix until everything is evenly incorporated.

Step 5

Add the 10g of seasoned seaweed (about 20 sheets), torn or finely chopped, into the bowl. The unique umami and crispy texture of the seasoned seaweed are a fantastic addition to the rice balls. Mix gently again to distribute the seaweed.

Step 6

Finally, add 1/4 Tbsp of salt for seasoning and 1 Tbsp of sesame seeds for a nutty flavor. If the seasoned seaweed is salty enough, you can omit the salt. Mix one last time to ensure all components are well combined.

Step 7

Now, take portions of the mixed rice and shape them into bite-sized balls. Wearing disposable gloves can make this process easier and cleaner. Gently squeeze and shape the rice into neat spheres. For an extra touch, you can roll the finished rice balls in extra seaweed flakes or sesame seeds. Your delicious tuna mayo rice balls are ready to enjoy!
