Savory and Delicious Jjajang Tteokbokki: A Kid-Favorite!
Weekend Dinner Recommendation: Make Your Own Delicious Jjajang Tteokbokki!
Hello, I’m Bebe Tokki Mom, your cooking guide! After a hearty lunch today, I decided to make a lighter yet incredibly satisfying meal for dinner: Jjajang Tteokbokki. This dish combines the beloved sweet and savory jjajang (black bean sauce) with chewy tteokbokki (rice cakes), creating a delightful fusion that’s perfect for a family meal or a special snack. It’s easy to make and packed with flavor!
Main Ingredients- 1 packet Jjajang powder (choose your preferred brand)
- 300g Tteokbokki rice cakes
- 2 sheets Fish cakes (eomuk)
- 2 Hard-boiled eggs
- 1 serving Instant ramen noodles
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Rinse the tteokbokki rice cakes under cold water. Place the rice cakes in a pot with 400ml of water and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Cook until the rice cakes become soft and pliable (about 3-5 minutes).
Step 2
Prepare the jjajang powder according to the package instructions. This usually involves mixing it with water to form a paste. Boil the eggs until hard-boiled and peel them.
Step 3
Cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces, about 2-3 cm squares. If using cabbage, chop it into large pieces. Slice the green onion diagonally. (You can also add carrots or onions for extra flavor!)
Step 4
Once the rice cakes are softened, add the cut fish cakes, cabbage, and green onion (if using) to the pot. Then, pour in the prepared jjajang mixture. It’s important to stir well to ensure the jjajang powder dissolves completely and doesn’t clump. For a smoother sauce, you can mix the jjajang powder with a little cold water or broth before adding it to the pot.
Step 5
Bring the mixture to a rolling boil over medium heat. Let it simmer for another 5-7 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken and the flavors to meld. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
Step 6
As the jjajang tteokbokki nears completion, preheat your air fryer. Place your chosen dumplings (like Bibigo beef or kimchi dumplings) in the air fryer and cook until golden brown and crispy. (Adjust time and temperature based on your air fryer’s specifications; typically around 180°C for 10-12 minutes).
Step 7
Finally, when the sauce has thickened to your liking, add the instant ramen noodles. Cook for just 1-2 minutes more, or until the noodles are tender. Once the noodles are cooked, turn off the heat. Serve the delicious jjajang tteokbokki with the hard-boiled eggs. The chewy rice cakes and noodles coated in the rich jjajang sauce are absolutely delightful. Enjoy it with the freshly air-fried crispy dumplings for a complete and satisfying meal!
