- 1 bowl of warm cooked rice
- 2 Tbsp stir-fried kimchi
- 2-3 slices of ham
- 1 slice of cheddar cheese
- 1 egg
Rice Seasoning- 2 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1 pinch of salt
- A little toasted sesame seeds
- 2 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1 pinch of salt
- A little toasted sesame seeds
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s make the stir-fried kimchi, which is key to the Round Gimbap, in a super simple way. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of finely chopped napa kimchi (sour kimchi), 1 tablespoon of sesame oil, a pinch of sugar, 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, and 1 tablespoon of toasted sesame seeds. Mix well.
Step 2
Microwave the well-mixed kimchi for 1 minute and 30 seconds. Take it out, stir it once more, and then microwave for another minute. This creates delicious stir-fried kimchi quickly, saving you on dishwashing and time.
Step 3
Lightly oil a pan and fry an egg. For children, it’s recommended to cook it until the yolk is slightly set, but you can also make it sunny-side up according to your preference. (Tip: For Round Gimbap, a slightly firmer yolk is better than a runny one, as it makes rolling cleaner.)
Step 4
Remove the fried egg temporarily, then grill the sliced ham in the same pan until golden brown. If you’re using thicker ham instead of sliced ham, slice it thinly. If using sliced ham, prepare 2-3 slices layered for a richer flavor.
Step 5
In a bowl with 1 bowl of warm cooked rice, add sesame oil, salt, and toasted sesame seeds. Mix thoroughly with a spatula to create seasoned rice. It’s best to season the rice when it’s not too hot to prevent the grains from getting mushy.
Step 6
Prepare the gimbap seaweed sheet. Cut only the bottom half of the seaweed sheet lengthwise with scissors. This makes it easier to create a sealing surface when rolling the gimbap.
Step 7
Place the cut seaweed sheet on a bamboo mat. Spread a thin layer of the seasoned rice on the right two-thirds of the seaweed. On the upper left section, place the prepared stir-fried kimchi. On the lower left section, arrange the cheddar cheese slice and the grilled ham. (Tip: Don’t spread the rice too thickly, or the roll might break; a thin layer is important.)
Step 8
Now, let’s shape it. Starting from the upper left section with the cheese, roll it upwards firmly, then fold and roll it once more to the right. Finally, overlap the remaining rice section of the seaweed on top, as shown in the picture, to complete the shape.
Step 9
Gently press the sides and top of the completed Round Gimbap with your hands to firm it up. This creates the cute Round Gimbap shape. Pressing while the rice is still warm helps it hold its shape better.
Step 10
There you have it! Now, grab your cute and delicious Round Gimbap with your hands and enjoy. These are perfect for kids’ lunchboxes, special occasions, or whenever you need a quick and tasty bite.
