Ingredients

  • 25g dried seaweed
  • 200g beef brisket, cut for soup
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil
  • 3 Tbsp soy sauce for soup (guk-ganjang)
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 1.5L water
  • 1 Tbsp fish sauce (anchovy or sand lance)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

We’re going to make a delicious beef and seaweed soup, perfect for birthdays or any day you want a hearty, comforting meal. This recipe guarantees a wonderfully deep flavor.

Step 1

Step 2

First, heat 1 tablespoon of sesame oil in a pot over medium heat. Add the beef brisket and stir-fry until the color changes and it’s lightly browned. Searing the beef first helps to develop its rich flavor for the broth.

Step 2

Step 3

Once the beef has changed color, add the pre-soaked and prepared dried seaweed. Stir-fry the seaweed with the beef for about 3-4 minutes until it softens and wilts. You can use perilla oil instead of sesame oil for a different, pleasant aroma.

Step 3

Step 4

After stir-frying the beef and seaweed thoroughly, they should be tender and have released their flavors. Now, add 1 teaspoon of minced garlic and 3 tablespoons of soy sauce for soup to season. This forms the base of our savory broth. Pour in 1.5 liters of water to create the soup base.

Step 4

Step 5

As the soup comes to a boil, skim off any foam that rises to the surface. This step ensures a clearer and cleaner-tasting broth. Finally, add 1 tablespoon of fish sauce to enhance the umami. Taste and adjust seasoning with more soy sauce or salt if needed.

Step 5

Step 6

And there you have it – a wonderfully delicious beef and seaweed soup that’s perfect for pouring over rice! Enjoy this comforting dish, whether for a special celebration or a simple, satisfying meal.
