Homemade Street Toast Recipe: A Trip Down Memory Lane
Enjoy a satisfying meal that brings back childhood memories with this classic street toast! Packed with crisp cabbage and a sweet and savory filling, it’s a crowd-pleaser for all ages. Let me show you how to make this simple yet delicious street toast!
Street Toast Ingredients- 8 slices of bread
- 250g cabbage (approx. 1/4 head)
- 30g carrot (approx. 1/5 carrot)
- 4 eggs
- 65g butter (approx. 4-5 Tbsp)
- 1 tsp salt
- Pinch of black pepper
- Ketchup
- 3 Tbsp sugar
- 2 Tbsp vinegar
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the cabbage, the star ingredient of this toast. Wash 250g of cabbage thoroughly and shred it as thinly as possible. Thin shreds will give a better texture and mix better with the egg mixture.
Step 2
Place the shredded cabbage in a bowl with 2 Tbsp of vinegar diluted in water. Gently swirl it around to rinse. This step helps to remove any raw cabbage smell and enhances its crispness.
Step 3
Thoroughly drain the rinsed cabbage. Excess water can make the egg mixture watery, affecting the taste. You can also press it gently with paper towels to remove as much moisture as possible.
Step 4
Add 30g of thinly shredded carrot to the drained cabbage. Carrots add a vibrant color and a touch of sweetness.
Step 5
Now, let’s make the egg mixture. Crack 4 eggs into a bowl, add 1 tsp of fine salt, and a generous pinch of black pepper. Adjust pepper to your liking.
Step 6
Pour the egg mixture over the shredded cabbage and carrot. Mix everything well with a fork or whisk until evenly combined. Ensure the vegetables are coated in the egg.
Step 7
Heat a pan with about 65g of butter over medium-low heat. Ladle the egg and vegetable mixture onto the pan, forming a thick patty. Cook slowly until golden brown on both sides. Cooking over medium-low heat ensures the inside is cooked through.
Step 8
While the egg patty is cooking, prepare another pan. Melt a generous amount of butter in this pan. The buttery flavor will make your toast even more delicious.
Step 9
Place 8 slices of bread in the buttered pan and toast them until golden brown on both sides. Cook over medium-low heat to prevent them from becoming too hard.
Step 10
On one side of a toasted bread slice, generously sprinkle 3 Tbsp of sugar. Place the cooked egg and cabbage patty on top, and then drizzle with ketchup as desired.
Step 11
Finally, top with another slice of toasted bread to complete your nostalgic street toast! Enjoy it while it’s warm for the best taste.
