Ingredients

  • 2 Tortillas
  • 2 Large Eggs
  • 8 slices Ham (adjust to your preference)
  • 4 slices Cheese (Cheddar or Mozzarella recommended)
  • 2 Tbsp Butter
  • 2 Tbsp Sugar

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, preheat a non-stick pan over medium-low heat without adding any oil. Place 4 slices of ham in the pan. Once the pan is warm, add 1 tablespoon of butter and let it melt, spreading it evenly across the pan. As the butter melts, it will infuse the ham with delicious flavor. Cook the ham for about 2-3 minutes per side until it’s golden brown and slightly crispy. Be mindful of the heat to prevent burning.

Step 1

Step 2

Once the ham is nicely browned, carefully crack 2 eggs onto one side of the pan. Gently break the yolks with a fork or chopstick and spread them out over the ham. This step allows the eggs to cook and absorb the savory flavor of the ham, becoming wonderfully tender.

Step 2

Step 3

Immediately after adding the eggs, before the steam dissipates, place one tortilla on top of the eggs and ham. Gently press down on the tortilla to ensure it adheres well. After a short while, the moisture from the cooking eggs and ham, along with the heat, will seep into the tortilla, making it wonderfully chewy and helping all the ingredients bind together naturally.

Step 3

Step 4

When the tortilla is well-attached to the pan and the egg on top is semi-cooked and starting to bind, it’s time to flip. Carefully use a wide spatula to flip the tortilla, egg, and ham together in one motion. Ensure the side with the ham and cheese will now face the pan.

Step 4

Step 5

On the uncooked side of the tortilla facing up, place 2 slices of cheese, covering the surface. The cheese will melt and help hold the ham and tortilla together. Evenly sprinkle 1 tablespoon of sugar over the cheese. This sugar will caramelize slightly, adding a delightful sweet note.

Step 5

Step 6

Now, it’s time to fold! Carefully fold the tortilla in half to create a semi-circle shape. This helps to contain the fillings and allows the outer layers to become extra crispy. Continue cooking on the pan for about 1-2 minutes per side, until both sides are golden brown and appetizingly toasted. Transfer to a warm plate, and your delicious Tortilla Toast is ready!

Step 6

Step 7

See? Wasn’t that surprisingly easy and delicious? Who knew you could make such a delightful toast without bread! Enjoy the fantastic combination of chewy tortilla, tender egg, savory ham, and sweet cheese and sugar.
