Quick & Easy Sesame Soy Sauce Gimbap

Craving gimbap but feeling too lazy to cook? Let’s make a super-simplified version that gives you that gimbap feel! We’ll mix rice with a simple soy sauce and sesame oil seasoning, roll it up, and coat it generously with toasted sesame seeds for an explosion of nutty flavor. This incredibly easy gimbap is surprisingly addictive!

Ingredients

  • 1.5 bowls of cooked rice (warm)
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil
  • Toasted sesame seeds (generous amount, to taste)
  • 3 sheets of rice paper wrappers
  • 2 sheets of dried seaweed (gim)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, let’s prepare the seasoned rice, which is key to the gimbap’s flavor. In a bowl with 1.5 bowls of warm cooked rice, add 1 Tbsp of soy sauce, 1 Tbsp of sesame oil, and 1 Tbsp of toasted sesame seeds. Gently mix everything together with a spatula or spoon, being careful not to mash the rice grains. If you taste it and find it’s not salty enough, you can add 2-3 pinches of salt. It’s important to mix it evenly so that each grain of rice gets a nice sheen.

Now, let’s get ready to roll the gimbap. Take one sheet of rice paper and dip it briefly in water, then lay it flat on a rolling mat or a large plate. Be careful not to over-soak the rice paper, as it can tear easily; it should be just moist. Place half a sheet of dried seaweed (gim) horizontally on top of the rice paper, leaving a small border. Spread a portion of the seasoned rice evenly over the seaweed, leaving about a 1 cm margin at the top edge. Fold the overlapping edges of the seaweed inward over the rice to create a neat base.

It’s time to roll! Using the rolling mat or your hands, start rolling the gimbap tightly and evenly from the bottom edge. The rice paper makes it very easy to roll without tearing the seaweed, creating a firm roll. It might feel a bit tricky at first, but you’ll get the hang of it quickly.

Let’s add that delicious nutty flavor! Lightly brush the outside of the rolled gimbap with a little sesame oil. This helps the toasted sesame seeds stick better and adds an extra layer of aroma. Then, roll the gimbap in a plate filled with toasted sesame seeds, coating all sides evenly and generously. Make sure the seeds adhere well to the entire surface.

Finally, we’ll pan-fry it to a lovely golden brown. Preheat a frying pan over medium-low heat and add a little cooking oil. Place the gimbap in the pan and gently roll it, ensuring all sides are evenly toasted and slightly crispy, about 2-3 minutes per side. This will warm through the filling and give the outside a delightful texture. Slice into bite-sized pieces and enjoy your quick and tasty gimbap!
