Today, I’ll show you a super simple side dish recipe for steamed Korean green peppers (kwari gochu), made easily using a microwave. It’s perfect for a quick and flavorful addition to your meal!

  • About 40 Korean green peppers (kwari gochu)
  • 2 Tbsp pancake mix (buchim garu)

Flavorful Sauce

  • 1 Tbsp red pepper flakes (gochugaru)
  • 2.5 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp + 1 tsp oligodang (corn syrup/oligosaccharide)
  • 1 Tbsp plum extract (maesil)
  • 0.5 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds
  • 2 Tbsp chopped green onion

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare about 40 Korean green peppers (kwari gochu). Wash them thoroughly under running water and pat them dry.

Gently twist off the stem ends of the peppers. To help the sauce penetrate, prick each pepper 2-3 times with a fork. Be careful not to mash the peppers when pricking them.

Take a clean resealable plastic bag and add all the washed peppers. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of pancake mix over the peppers.

Seal the bag tightly and shake it gently up and down. Continue shaking until the pancake mix evenly coats each pepper with a thin layer.

Place the coated peppers into a microwave-safe dish or seal the bag by twisting the opening. Microwave for about 1 minute, then microwave for another minute, for a total of 2 minutes. The peppers should become slightly translucent and softened. (Cooking time may vary depending on your microwave’s wattage.)

Now, let’s make the delicious sauce. In a bowl, combine 1 Tbsp red pepper flakes, 2.5 Tbsp soy sauce, 2 Tbsp + 1 tsp oligodang, 1 Tbsp plum extract, 0.5 Tbsp minced garlic, 1 Tbsp sesame oil, 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds, and 2 Tbsp chopped green onion.

The peppers will be hot after microwaving, so transfer them to a bowl and let them cool slightly. This step helps the sauce mix evenly and prevents the peppers from becoming mushy.
