Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Hello everyone! Today, I’m going to share a recipe for making the universally loved Jjajangbap at home, really quickly and easily. With just one delicious jar of Jjajang sauce, a wonderful meal is ready in no time!
Step 2
First, let’s prepare the vegetables that are key to a flavorful Jjajangbap. Peel the potatoes and dice them into approximately 1cm cubes. Peel and chop the onions into similar-sized pieces (about 1-1.5cm). Cutting the vegetables too small can make them mushy when cooked, so aim for a satisfying bite-sized piece.
Step 3
Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a deep pan over medium heat. Add the diced potatoes first and sauté until their surfaces are slightly golden. Once the potatoes are partially cooked, add the chopped onions and continue to stir-fry until they become translucent and release their sweet aroma. Be careful not to burn them by using high heat; medium heat is ideal for this stage.
Step 4
Once the potatoes and onions are nicely sautéed and translucent, push them to one side of the pan. Add the ground pork to the cleared space and cook it. For extra flavor, season the pork beforehand with a pinch of salt and pepper. Break up any clumps and stir-fry until the pork is no longer pink and becomes crumbly and cooked through.
Step 5
After the pork is fully cooked, mix it together with the sautéed vegetables and aromatics. Add just enough water to barely cover the ingredients (about 100-150ml), and bring it to a rolling boil over high heat. Simmering the ingredients with a bit of water helps them absorb the flavors more deeply.
Step 6
Once the sauce is boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low. Stir in the store-bought Jjajang sauce, adjusting the amount to your preference. Stir continuously to ensure the sauce doesn’t clump and let it simmer for another 2-3 minutes, allowing the ingredients and sauce to meld together beautifully.
Step 7
Now it’s time to achieve the perfect sauce consistency. In a small bowl, whisk together 2 tablespoons of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water to create a slurry. Gradually pour this cornstarch mixture into the simmering Jjajang sauce while stirring. This will thicken the sauce to your desired consistency. Add it slowly and check the thickness as you go.
Step 8
It’s time to assemble your Jjajangbap! Fill a bowl with your warm, fluffy rice. Generously ladle the delicious, freshly made Jjajang sauce over the rice. Top it off with a perfectly fried egg for an extra touch of delight! If you like, sprinkle some chopped scallions on top for a beautiful garnish.
Step 9
Your delicious and heartwarming homemade Jjajangbap is ready! Enjoy your meal with the enticing aroma of Jjajang!
