  • Cooking : Stir-fry

  • Cooking Time : Within 30 minutes
  • Difficulty : Anyone

Main Ingredients

  • 1 package frozen fish cakes (eomuk, approx. 300g)
  • 1/2 stalk green onion
  • 1 red chili pepper (for color, optional)

Seasoning

  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp soup soy sauce (or regular soy sauce)
  • 1 Tbsp cooking syrup (or corn syrup, sugar)
  • 1 Tbsp rice wine (mirin)
  • 1 Tbsp sesame seeds
  • 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
  • A pinch of black pepper

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, take out one package of frozen fish cakes from the freezer. Cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces, about 5cm long. If the fish cakes are thin, stacking them before cutting makes it easier.

Step 1

Step 2

Slice the green onion to about 5cm in length. If the stalk is thick, split it in half lengthwise. This helps the seasoning penetrate evenly and speeds up cooking.

Step 2

Step 3

Slice the red chili pepper diagonally for a touch of color. If you prefer it spicier, remove the seeds or substitute with a Korean green chili pepper (cheongyang chili).

Step 3

Step 4

In a small bowl, combine 1 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 Tbsp soup soy sauce, 1 Tbsp cooking syrup, 1 Tbsp rice wine, 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic, and a pinch of black pepper. Mix well to create the seasoning sauce.

Step 4

Step 5

Heat a lightly oiled pan over medium heat. Add the cut fish cakes and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes. This step coats the fish cakes in oil, giving them a chewier texture.

Step 5

Step 6

Once the fish cakes are slightly cooked, add the sliced green onion and red chili pepper. Stir-fry briefly until the vegetables are just softened. Avoid overcooking to maintain a slight crunch.

Step 6

Step 7

Turn the heat up to high. Pour in the prepared seasoning sauce and quickly stir-fry to coat the fish cakes and vegetables evenly. Keep stir-frying for 1-2 minutes, being careful not to burn the sauce.

Step 7

Step 8

Finally, taste and adjust the seasoning according to your preference (add more soy sauce or sweetener if needed). Just before finishing, sprinkle generously with 1 Tbsp of sesame seeds for a nutty aroma. Your delicious stir-fried fish cakes are ready to be enjoyed with a bowl of warm rice!
