Ingredients

  • 500g fresh chestnuts
  • 1L water (approx.)
  • 1 Tbsp coarse salt

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, it’s crucial to wash the chestnuts thoroughly. Gently scrub the surface of each chestnut with your hands, rinsing them 2-3 times. This removes any dirt or debris, ensuring a more hygienic and pleasant eating experience.

Step 1

Step 2

Place the washed chestnuts in a large bowl. Pour enough water to generously cover them. Add 1 tablespoon of coarse salt and let the chestnuts soak for 30 minutes. This soaking process helps to mellow out any bitter flavors and ensures the chestnuts become moist inside.

Step 2

Step 3

After soaking, check if any chestnuts are floating on the surface of the water. Chestnuts that float might have been infested by worms or could be hollow. Carefully inspect them and remove any that seem questionable.

Step 3

Step 4

Now, transfer the selected chestnuts into a pot. Add plenty of water, ensuring the chestnuts are fully submerged. Bring the water to a boil over high heat.

Step 4

Step 5

Once the water reaches a rolling boil, reduce the heat to medium. Cover the pot tightly with a lid and let the chestnuts simmer for about 25 minutes. The cooking time may vary slightly depending on the size of the chestnuts. After 25 minutes, turn off the heat and let them steam, covered, for another 5 minutes. This resting period helps the chestnuts cook through evenly. Keeping the lid on is key to retaining moisture!

Step 5

Step 6

As soon as the chestnuts are done boiling, carefully remove them from the hot water and immediately plunge them into a bowl of cold water. This rapid cooling helps to contract the skin, making it much easier to peel later.

Step 6

Step 7

Once the chestnuts have cooled slightly in the cold water, try peeling them. You’ll find that the skins slip off much more easily than you might expect, thanks to the cold shock. Start peeling from the thinner parts of the skin.

Step 7

Step 8

Voila! Your perfectly boiled and easily peelable chestnuts are ready. Enjoy these warm, fluffy, and deliciously sweet treats. They make a wonderful snack for kids and a fantastic accompaniment for drinks for adults!
