Delicious Pan-Fried Tofu Made with Egg Wash (Baek Jong-Won Style)
A recipe for pan-fried tofu where soft tofu meets the richness of egg, making it even more delicious when coated in a savory egg batter. Enjoy this delightful tofu dish.
Main Ingredients- 1/2 block firm tofu (approx. 300g)
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 stalk scallions or green onions
- 1/6 carrot
- 3 Tbsp cooking oil
Seasoning for Egg Wash- Pinch of salt (approx. 1/2 tsp)
- Pinch of black pepper (approx. 1/2 tsp)
- Pinch of salt (approx. 1/2 tsp)
- Pinch of black pepper (approx. 1/2 tsp)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Prepare half a block of firm tofu and slice it into thick pieces, about 1.5cm (approximately 0.6 inches) thick. Slicing it a bit thicker makes it easier to pan-fry without breaking and improves the texture. Cut into desired square shapes.
Step 2
I’m preparing the carrot for decoration. You can finely julienne or mince it to mix into the egg wash for added color and flavor. However, today, I’ll use a small cookie cutter to create pretty shapes for garnish. Cut the carrot into small, decorative pieces.
Step 3
Finely chop the scallions or green onions. This will add a lovely aromatic touch to the dish.
Step 4
Now, let’s make the egg wash. Crack one egg into a wide bowl. Add a pinch of salt (about 1/2 tsp) and a pinch of black pepper (about 1/2 tsp). Whisk the egg mixture well with a fork or whisk until smooth and no lumps remain. Lightly seasoning the egg wash will enhance the overall flavor of the pan-fried tofu.
Step 5
It’s time to pan-fry. Heat a frying pan over medium-low heat and add about 3 tablespoons of cooking oil. Once the pan is moderately hot, dip each slice of tofu into the egg wash, ensuring both sides are evenly coated. Gently shake off any excess egg wash.
Step 6
Carefully place the egg-coated tofu slices into the heated pan. Maintain a medium-low or low heat throughout the cooking process. If the heat is too high, the egg coating will burn quickly, so be mindful. Cook until one side is golden brown and then flip to cook the other side to a similar golden hue. Patience is key to achieving a tender, perfectly fried tofu.
Step 7
Once both sides of the tofu have started to turn golden brown, it’s time for another flip. As you flip the tofu, gently spoon a little more of the remaining egg wash onto the top surface, and then arrange the pre-cut carrot decorations on top. The egg wash will help the carrots adhere to the tofu.
Step 8
Finally, cook the side with the carrots for a little longer. Once the carrots are securely attached and all sides of the tofu are evenly cooked, your delicious pan-fried tofu is ready! Serve immediately while warm to enjoy its soft and savory flavors.
