Today’s home-cooked meal is a delightful instant meal experience! We cleared our plates with microwave-steamed dumplings alongside a rich oyster jjamppong. This is a white jjamppong base, enhanced with oysters to become oyster jjamppong. I added only three oysters for myself, and for other ingredients, I used minced garlic, green onions, bean sprouts, and roasted seaweed. Adding seaweed imparts a fragrant aroma of the sea. It also thickens the broth, and the unique scent of seaweed is wonderful. I heard of a jjamppong restaurant that adds seaweed, or was it kelp? Anyway, even though it’s instant, this meal was prepared with a little extra care. For the dim sum, the xiaolongbao and chives dumplings usually require steaming, but feeling a bit lazy and considering the cleanup, I opted for the simpler microwave steaming method. A quick search revealed this technique. I added a little extra: I placed the frozen dumplings on parchment paper, let them thaw naturally, and once moisture appeared, I covered them with a damp paper towel and steamed them in the microwave for 7 minutes.
Ingredients- White Jjamppong noodles 2 packs
- Minced garlic 1 tsp
- Chopped green onion 2 Tbsp
- Bean sprouts a handful
- Roasted seaweed 4 sheets
- Oysters 3 pcs (fresh or thawed)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
In a pot, add one ‘Yuksu Hanal’ broth cube from Broth Master and the two soup base packets from the White Jjamppong. Add 2 sheets of roasted seaweed and the bean sprouts. Bring everything to a boil. Once boiling, add the thawed oysters and let it boil again, as they were frozen.
Step 2
Line a microwave-safe dish or container with parchment paper. Place the frozen dumplings (xiaolongbao, chun juan) on top to thaw naturally. As the dumplings release moisture, the parchment paper will become damp, so there’s no need to add extra water.
Step 3
Cover the thawed dumplings with a damp paper towel. It should be moist, like a wet wipe, not dripping wet. Steam in the microwave for about 7 minutes. It’s best to steam them all at once without flipping, as flipping dim sum can cause the precious juices to escape. (If the dumplings are large, check their doneness after 5 minutes and steam for a few more minutes if needed).
Step 4
Once the jjamppong broth is boiling vigorously, add the White Jjamppong noodles and the 2 eggs. The dried noodles in this White Jjamppong are great because they don’t get mushy easily.
Step 5
These perfectly steamed dumplings, fresh from the microwave, are bursting with delicious juice! It’s amazing how you can achieve such wonderful steamed dumplings using just the microwave. While it might seem like a bit of effort, it’s a fantastic way to quickly and deliciously solve a meal when you’re feeling a bit lazy. Simply microwaving them would result in a dry, less flavorful dish, but this steaming method makes all the difference.
Step 6
Your white jjamppong, now transformed into a flavorful oyster jjamppong, is ready! The deep sea aroma from the roasted seaweed and the fresh oyster flavors combine for a truly delicious experience. Since seaweed absorbs moisture, we recommend adding the remaining sheets right at the end if you want to adjust the broth’s consistency.
Step 7
Here is today’s home-cooked meal, featuring microwave-steamed dumplings and a refreshing white jjamppong (now oyster jjamppong)!
