Onion Storage: Keep Fresh for Over a Week, Even in Rainy Season!
How to Store Onions to Prevent Spoilage and Mold During the Rainy Season and Summer
During the monsoon season and hot summer months, onions can spoil and develop mold very quickly, whether they have their skins on or not. Today, I’ll share a foolproof method for storing onions to keep them fresh for over a week.
Ingredients
- Onions (as many as you have)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, peel all the outer skins off the onions you plan to store. Onions are sensitive to moisture, and even with the skin on, they can spoil if they become damp.
Step 2
Rinse the peeled onions under clean running water to remove any dirt or impurities from the surface.
Step 3
Next, thoroughly pat the onions dry with a kitchen towel. It’s crucial to remove all excess moisture, as lingering water can lead to spoilage. (You don’t need to air-dry them completely.)
Step 4
Place the dried onions onto a sheet of plastic wrap.
Step 5
Wrap the onion tightly with the plastic wrap, ensuring there are no air pockets. A complete seal is key to maintaining freshness.
Step 6
Store the tightly wrapped onions in the refrigerator. I’ve tested this method, and onions stored at room temperature spoil in less than 3 days. However, when refrigerated, they easily last for over a week without spoiling. Enjoy your fresh onions for longer!
