Omurice: A Delicious and Heartwarming Meal for Kids!

Kids absolutely adore omurice! While it might take a bit of effort, the joy on your children’s faces makes every step worthwhile. This is a dish made with a mother’s love, embodying the effort one is willing to make for their loved ones. Now you can create this restaurant-worthy dish at home!

Recipe Info

  • Category : Rice / Porridge / Rice cake
  • Ingredient Category : Rice
  • Occasion : Nutritious food
  • Cooking : Stir-fry
  • Servings : 3 servings
  • Cooking Time : Within 60 minutes
  • Difficulty : Anyone

For the Fried Rice

  • 2 medium potatoes
  • 1/4 carrot
  • 1 onion
  • 1/4 zucchini
  • 1/4 bell pepper
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 Tbsp cooking oil

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Wash and prepare all the vegetables that will go into the omurice.

Step 1

Step 2

Finely dice all the prepared vegetables (potatoes, carrot, onion, zucchini, bell pepper). For best results, dice them into roughly 0.5 cm pieces. If you slice them into thin strips first and then gather them to cut short, they will cook evenly and blend well into the fried rice.

Step 2

Step 3

Heat 2 tablespoons of cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Add all the diced vegetables and stir-fry. While it’s ideal to sauté each vegetable separately, you can also cook them all together in one pan, especially when you’re short on time. Season lightly with 1/4 teaspoon of salt as the vegetables begin to soften.

Step 3

Step 4

To ensure the vegetables cook quickly and become tender, add 2 tablespoons of water to the pan while stir-frying. Immediately cover with a lid and reduce the heat to low. Let it steam for about 2-3 minutes. This process will make the vegetables moist and improve the texture of your fried rice.

Step 4

Step 5

Once the vegetables are cooked, add 2 bowls of cooked rice and 1 tablespoon of sesame oil. Use a spatula to break up any clumps of rice and stir-fry thoroughly. Add more salt if needed to adjust the seasoning of the rice. Continue to stir-fry over low heat until the rice grains are separate and slightly toasted for a delicious fried rice.

Step 5

Step 6

You could enjoy this as is for a delicious fried rice, but today we’re transforming it into a special omurice!

Step 6

Step 7

In a clean bowl, crack 6 eggs. Whisk them gently until the yolks and whites are well combined, but avoid creating too much foam. Since we’ll be topping the omurice with ketchup, do not add any salt to the egg mixture.

Step 7

Step 8

Preheat a clean non-stick frying pan over medium-low heat. Add about 1/2 tablespoon of cooking oil. Use a paper towel to evenly coat the entire surface of the pan with a thin layer of oil. Wipe away any excess oil to prevent the omelet from becoming too thick.

Step 8

Step 9

Lower the heat to very low. Pour the beaten egg mixture thinly and evenly into the pan, ensuring it spreads out to form a round shape.

Step 9

Step 10

Once the bottom of the egg starts to set, carefully flip the omelet using chopsticks or a spatula. Be careful not to overcook it, as it can become dry. Cook until it’s just lightly golden brown. (Tip: Avoid cooking it until it turns dark brown!)

Step 10

Step 11

Gently spread the cooked omelet onto a serving plate. Then, mound the prepared fried rice in an oval shape onto the center of the omelet. Shape the fried rice neatly.

Step 11

Step 12

Wearing clean disposable gloves, carefully fold the edges of the omelet over the fried rice to enclose it. Then, gently invert the entire omurice onto the serving plate, so the omelet side is facing up. Adjust the shape for a neat presentation.

Step 12

Step 13

Finally, drizzle ketchup in a zigzag pattern or your desired design over the omurice. Your delicious omurice, loved by both kids and adults, is now complete! Enjoy your meal!
