Main Ingredients

  • 1 block tofu
  • 1/12 carrot
  • 1 stalk scallion
  • 1/8 onion

Seasoning

  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 Tbsp sesame oil
  • 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 tsp salt
  • A pinch of sesame seeds

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, let’s prepare the vegetables. Peel the onion and carrot, then thinly slice them into about 0.5cm thick pieces. Chop the scallions into similar sizes. Having your vegetables prepped makes the cooking process much smoother.

Step 2

Gently rinse the tofu under running water, then cut it into bite-sized pieces (about 2-3cm). It’s important to pat the cut tofu dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. This step prevents oil splattering when frying and helps achieve a crispier texture. Now, lightly sprinkle salt over the surfaces of the tofu for seasoning. (Optional: Sprinkling salt enhances the tofu’s savory flavor.)

Step 3

Heat a pan with a generous amount of cooking oil. Fry the prepared tofu pieces until they are golden brown and slightly crispy on both sides. Cooking over medium-low heat allows the tofu to warm through and become deliciously crisp on the outside. Be careful not to burn the tofu; aim for a beautiful golden-brown color.

Step 4

Let’s make the delicious simmering sauce! In a bowl, combine 2 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 Tbsp sugar, 1/2 Tbsp sesame oil, and 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic. Whisk everything together until well combined. Your sauce is ready!

Step 5

Now it’s time to simmer. Arrange the golden-brown fried tofu pieces neatly in the pan. Pour the prepared sauce evenly over the tofu. Add 1/2 cup of water (about 100ml) and let it simmer gently over medium-low heat until the sauce thickens slightly. Stir occasionally to ensure the tofu absorbs the flavors well. You can add the chopped vegetables at this stage too.

Step 6

Once the tofu has absorbed the sauce and it has thickened to your liking, turn off the heat. Transfer the finished Vegetable Tofu Simmer to a serving plate. Sprinkle with sesame seeds for a final touch of nutty flavor and aroma. Your delightful weeknight side dish, ‘Vegetable Tofu Simmer,’ is ready to be enjoyed!
