How to Make Creamy and Savory Sweet Rice Porridge (Tarakjuk) with Glutinous Rice Flour
I’ve made Tarakjuk, a luxurious porridge once enjoyed by royalty, conveniently at home. Using glutinous rice flour makes this dish easy and delicious to prepare and enjoy. It’s a perfect, comforting meal or snack, especially as the weather gets cooler. Experience a truly heartwarming dish!
Ingredients- 130g glutinous rice flour (about 1 cup)
- 700ml fresh milk (about 3 cups)
- 1.5 Tbsp sugar (adjust to taste)
- 1.5 tsp salt (balances the flavor)
- 1 dried jujube (for garnish)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
In a large bowl, place the 130g of glutinous rice flour. Add about 250ml (about 1 cup) of cold milk to it. It’s important to mix this thoroughly until it’s smooth and lump-free.

Using a whisk or spatula, mix the glutinous rice flour and milk until completely smooth, ensuring there are no lumps. Creating a smooth milk batter is key to achieving a creamy texture for the Tarakjuk.
Step 3
Transfer the well-mixed batter to a pot. Pour in the remaining 450ml (about 2 cups) of milk. To prevent sticking, start with medium-high heat. Once it begins to simmer, reduce the heat to medium-low and stir constantly as it cooks.

Once the porridge starts to bubble, add 1.5 tsp of salt to season it. Salt enhances the sweetness and deepens the overall flavor of the porridge.

Next, add 1.5 Tbsp of sugar to sweeten it. You can adjust the amount of sugar according to your preference. Add more if you like it sweeter, or reduce it for a less sweet taste.

Tarakjuk can easily scorch at the bottom, so be sure to cook it over low heat, stirring continuously. When bubbles start to appear on the surface and the porridge thickens, it’s nearly done. Turn off the heat as soon as it reaches your desired consistency.

While the porridge is cooking, prepare the jujube garnish. Rinse the dried jujubes, remove the seeds, and thinly slice them in a decorative peeling pattern. Roll up the sliced jujubes and cut them to create an appealing garnish.
Step 8
