Nourishing Abalone Samgyetang (Ginseng Chicken Soup)
Abalone Samgyetang: A Revitalizing Dish for My Husband
I made this nourishing Abalone Samgyetang for my husband who just returned from a business trip! It’s a perfect dish to boost energy with the goodness of fresh abalone and tender chicken, creating a deeply flavorful broth. Enjoy this hearty and healthy meal at home!
Ingredients- 1 whole chicken (young chicken or native chicken)
- 1 liter of water
- 1 packet of Harim Traditional Baek숙yong Herb Mix (for boiling chicken)
- 1 stalk of green onion
- 15 cloves of garlic
- 10 fresh abalones
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
To remove any gamey odor and impurities from the chicken, soak it in cold water for about 20 minutes. This step helps create a cleaner tasting broth.
Step 2
Pour 1 liter of fresh water into a pot and bring it to a boil.
Step 3
Once the water is rapidly boiling, carefully place the prepared chicken into the pot. Ensure the chicken is fully submerged in the water.
Step 4
At this point, add the Harim Traditional Baek숙yong Herb Mix packet along with the chicken into the pot. These herbs will add a deep and rich flavor to the samgyetang.
Step 5
Simmer over medium heat for about 10 minutes to allow the flavors and beneficial properties of the herbs to infuse into the broth. This step helps extract the essence of the herbs.
Step 6
Prepare the green onion by chopping it into bite-sized pieces. Using both the white and green parts of the stalk will add more flavor.
Step 7
Add the 15 whole cloves of garlic to the pot along with the chicken. As the garlic cooks, it will release its sweetness and contribute to a refreshing broth.
Step 8
Prepare the 10 fresh abalones. Scrub the shells clean, then use a spoon to pry the abalone meat from the shell. Remove the innards and the tough beak. You can score the abalone meat for better texture and presentation before adding it to the pot.
Step 9
Cover the pot with a lid and let it simmer on low heat for about 1 hour. This slow cooking process tenderizes the chicken and allows all the flavors to meld together beautifully.
Step 10
After an hour, check if the chicken is fully cooked. Insert a chopstick into the thickest part of the thigh; if no pink juices run out, it’s ready. Once the chicken is cooked, your Abalone Samgyetang is almost complete!
Step 11
Your delicious Abalone Samgyetang is ready! Enjoy the comforting, flavorful broth, tender chicken, and chewy abalone. Season with salt and pepper to your liking. This is a perfect, hearty meal to share with your loved ones!
