Nostalgic Tuna and Onion Stir-Fry: An Ultra-Simple Side Dish for Solo Living

During my university days, I lived away from home and experienced solo living in a small studio apartment. I deeply missed my mother’s home-cooked meals, the warm, comforting food she prepared every morning. The only time I could enjoy her cooking was during holidays when I visited home. In those days, I learned to cook and fend for myself, relying on homemade dishes rather than instant foods like curry or jjajang. Looking back, I realize I was quite capable! One of the simple side dishes I used to make was this Tuna and Onion Stir-Fry. It might have been the very first dish I ever made on my own while living alone, though it was so long ago, I can’t be entirely sure. Recently, I’ve been exploring recipes using canned tuna, a popular gift item during Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving). That’s when the memory of this stir-fry came back to me. I decided to recreate it, thinking of the taste and memories from my university days. Making this dish after so many years brought a rush of emotions. Now, let me guide you through making this delicious Tuna and Onion Stir-Fry.

Recipe Info

  • Category : Side dish
  • Ingredient Category : Processed foods
  • Occasion : Quick & Easy
  • Cooking : Stir-fry
  • Servings : 2 servings
  • Cooking Time : Within 30 minutes
  • Difficulty : Anyone

Ingredients

  • 1 can (125g) Tuna
  • 1 Onion
  • 2 Tbsp Cooking Oil
  • 1.5 Tbsp Red Pepper Flakes (Gochugaru)
  • 1 Tbsp Toasted Sesame Seeds
  • 1/4 tsp Salt

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, finely dice the onion into approximately 0.5cm x 0.5cm pieces. Dicing them small will help release their natural sweetness when stir-fried and create a softer texture.

Step 1

Step 2

Heat 2 tablespoons of cooking oil in a preheated pan over medium heat. Add the diced onions and stir-fry, making sure they don’t burn, until they become translucent and tender. This process brings out the onion’s sweetness.

Step 2

Step 3

Once the onions are more than 50% cooked and releasing a sweet aroma, add the drained tuna (you can also include the oil from the can for extra flavor), 1.5 tablespoons of red pepper flakes (gochugaru), and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Stir-fry everything together until well combined. Be sure to adjust the heat to medium-low to prevent the seasonings from burning.

Step 3

Step 4

When the tuna and seasonings are evenly mixed and deliciously stir-fried, finish by sprinkling 1 tablespoon of toasted sesame seeds over the dish. The nutty flavor of the sesame seeds adds a wonderful finishing touch. This Tuna and Onion Stir-Fry is a perfect side dish to enjoy with warm rice.
