The Harmony of Sweet and Savory: Street Toast
Do you sometimes crave the taste of street toast from childhood? It’s easy to make at home, so I’m sharing a delicious and simple recipe you can whip up whenever the craving strikes. It’s a satisfying meal or snack that brings back fond memories!
Toast Ingredients- 1 Egg
- 2 Slices of Bread
- 1 Slice of Ham
- 1 Tbsp Canned Corn
- A little Shredded Cabbage
Sauces & Condiments- 1 Tbsp Strawberry Jam or Honey
- 2/3 Tbsp Mayonnaise
- 1 Tbsp Ketchup
- 1 Tbsp Strawberry Jam or Honey

Cooking Instructions
Step 1
In a bowl, crack 1 egg and add 1 tablespoon of canned corn. Whisk them together with a fork until well combined. The corn adds a delightful texture and makes the egg mixture even more tender.
Step 2
Wash the cabbage thoroughly and shred it as finely as possible. Rinse the shredded cabbage briefly in cold water to remove any strong flavor and make it crispier. Drain well and set aside.
Step 3
Heat a pan over medium-low heat and add a little cooking oil. Place the slice of ham in the pan. Pour the whisked egg and corn mixture around the ham, cooking them together. The ham will render some fat, making the egg even more flavorful.
Step 4
As the egg mixture begins to set around the edges, gently stir with a spoon or spatula. Cook until both sides are golden brown and have a beautiful color. It’s best to cook it to a medium thickness.
Step 5
Wipe the pan used for the ham and egg with a paper towel to remove excess oil. In the now clean, oil-free pan, place the 2 slices of bread and toast them until golden brown on both sides. The bread will become warm and wonderfully crispy.
Step 6
Prepare the toasted bread. On one slice, spread 2/3 tablespoon of mayonnaise thinly. On the other slice, generously spread 1 tablespoon of strawberry jam or honey. This is the perfect step to create the sweet and savory harmony.
Step 7
On the slice with mayonnaise, pile a generous amount of the prepared shredded cabbage. Then, neatly layer the golden-brown ham and egg on top of the cabbage. The flavors will meld together beautifully.
Step 8
Finally, drizzle 1 tablespoon of ketchup in a zigzag pattern over the cabbage, ham, and egg. The sweet and tangy ketchup will balance out the overall flavors.
Step 9
Place the other slice of bread on top to complete the toast. Cut it in half for easier handling and serve elegantly on a plate. Your nostalgic street toast is ready! It’s best enjoyed immediately while warm.
