Nostalgic Soy Sauce Rice Rolls (Green Onion Soy Sauce)
Lee Young-ja’s Soy Sauce Rice Rolls / Green Onion Soy Sauce Recipe
This is a nostalgic kimbap recipe shared by guest Kim Na-young on Lee Young-ja’s story-filled cooking show. It’s incredibly simple, with no fancy ingredients, yet it’s absolutely delicious.
Kimbap Ingredients- 200g warm cooked rice (about 1 bowl)
- 2 sheets of gim (seaweed) (or plain, unseasoned gim)
The Star: Green Onion Soy Sauce Dressing- 40g green onions (about a handful)
- 5 Tbsp soy sauce
- 2 Tbsp water
- 2 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1 Tbsp red pepper flakes (gochugaru)
- A pinch of sesame seeds (ground)
- 40g green onions (about a handful)
- 5 Tbsp soy sauce
- 2 Tbsp water
- 2 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1 Tbsp red pepper flakes (gochugaru)
- A pinch of sesame seeds (ground)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s prepare the green onion soy sauce dressing, which is the key to this kimbap’s unique flavor. Wash the green onions thoroughly, pat them dry, and then finely chop them. The fresh aroma of green onions will blend with the soy sauce to create a special taste.
Step 2
In a wide bowl, combine the chopped green onions (40g), soy sauce (5 Tbsp), water (2 Tbsp), sesame oil (2 Tbsp), red pepper flakes (1 Tbsp), and the ground sesame seeds. Mix well. The key to deliciousness is to make a generous amount of dressing so that the green onions are well submerged; more ingredients mean more flavor!
Step 3
To the fluffy, warm rice, add 1 Tbsp of sesame oil and mix thoroughly. Lightly toasting the gim on a dry pan will make it crispier and more flavorful. Lay the toasted gim on a bamboo mat, spread a portion of the sesame oil-seasoned rice evenly, and then spoon the prepared green onion soy sauce over the rice, focusing on the green onions. Be careful not to add too much dressing, as it can make the kimbap too salty.
Step 4
Now, let’s roll the kimbap! Starting from the bottom edge of the gim, gently press down the rice and filling with your fingers to keep everything together, and then roll it up firmly with moderate pressure. It’s important to roll smoothly to prevent the gim from tearing, ensuring a beautiful shape.
Step 5
You can enjoy the freshly rolled soy sauce kimbap whole by hand, or slice it into bite-sized pieces. Slicing them into smaller pieces makes them even neater to eat.
Step 6
Kim Na-young’s ‘Aunt’s Soy Sauce Kimbap,’ as introduced on the show, is now complete! This is a taste of nostalgia that you can enjoy not just on special occasions, but anytime.
Step 7
Serve this incredibly simple yet delicious Lee Young-ja soy sauce kimbap on a plate, and you’ll have a wonderful meal or snack ready.
Step 8
This kimbap offers a refreshing yet deep umami flavor without any complicated steps. It tastes like the familiar flavor of rice mixed with just sesame oil, sesame seeds, and salt, but the combination of the pungent green onions and soy sauce makes it even more special. It truly embodies the saying, ‘familiar tastes can be deceptively addictive.’
