How to Stir-Fry Sea Mustard Stems Simply and Deliciously – The Ultimate Recipe
This is a side dish that reminds me of childhood, something my mother often made. It’s a comforting and flavorful dish with a nostalgic touch.
Main Ingredients- Salted Sea Mustard Stem 270g
- Carrot 1/3 (approx. 50g)
Seasoning- Tuna Extract 1 Tbsp (or Korean soup soy sauce)
- Minced Garlic 1 Tbsp
- Sesame Oil 1 Tbsp
- Toasted Sesame Seeds 1 Tbsp
- Tuna Extract 1 Tbsp (or Korean soup soy sauce)
- Minced Garlic 1 Tbsp
- Sesame Oil 1 Tbsp
- Toasted Sesame Seeds 1 Tbsp
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Here we have 270g of fresh, clean salted sea mustard stem. This ingredient captures the authentic flavor of the sea.
Step 2
It’s crucial to remove the saltiness from the salted sea mustard stem. Rinse it thoroughly multiple times under cold running water. Then, soak it in cold water to draw out the salt. There’s no fixed soaking time; taste the stems periodically to check when they reach your desired saltiness. Be careful not to soak them for too long, as this can make the texture mushy.
Step 3
Once the saltiness is adequately reduced, rinse the sea mustard stem once more under clean water. Then, place it in a colander to drain the water completely. Any remaining moisture can make the dish watery when stir-fried.
Step 4
Cut the drained sea mustard stem into bite-sized pieces, approximately 5cm long. If they are too long, they might be difficult to stir-fry or eat.
Step 5
Julienne the carrot thinly. This will add color and a pleasant crunch to the dish.
Step 6
Now, add the prepared carrots to the pan first and stir-fry them briefly. Stir-frying the carrots first brings out their natural sweetness and softens them.
Step 7
Add 1 Tbsp of minced garlic to enhance the fragrant aroma. Stir-fry them together until the garlic becomes fragrant.
Step 8
Add 1 Tbsp of tuna extract for a savory umami boost. You can use Korean soup soy sauce, but tuna extract provides a deeper, richer flavor.
Step 9
Now, turn up the heat to high and quickly stir-fry all the ingredients. Since salted sea mustard stems are pre-blanched and salted, they don’t require long cooking. Stir-fry briskly for just about 1-2 minutes until the ingredients are well combined.
Step 10
Taste the dish while stir-frying. If it’s not salty enough, add a little more tuna extract or Korean soup soy sauce to adjust the seasoning. Once seasoned, turn off the heat and stir in 1 Tbsp of sesame oil for a nutty aroma.
Step 11
Sprinkle 1 Tbsp of toasted sesame seeds generously to further enhance the nutty flavor. Sesame seeds play an important role in elevating the final presentation and taste of the dish.
Step 12
Isn’t that simple? Your delicious stir-fried sea mustard stem, with its crisp texture, refreshing sea flavor, and savory depth, is now complete! Enjoy it as a perfect side dish with your warm rice.
