  • A splash of lemon juice
  • A pinch of salt

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

The key ingredients for this old-fashioned fruit salad are apples, cucumbers, boiled potatoes, quail eggs, and raisins. Feel free to add other fruits and vegetables like persimmons, tangerines, or cherry tomatoes according to your preference. With mayonnaise, sugar, and lemon juice as the base, almost any addition will taste delicious!

Step 2

First, let’s boil the quail eggs. I’ll use about 10 for the salad and make braised quail eggs for the kids with the rest.

Step 3

A helpful tip for boiling quail eggs: Before the water boils, gently rotate the eggs with chopsticks about 10 times in one direction. This centers the yolk, making the shell much easier to peel off later. (For more detailed instructions on boiling and peeling quail eggs, please refer to the link provided in the separate post.)

Step 4

I’ve prepared one medium-sized apple. You can peel it or leave the skin on, depending on your preference. The apple skin is rich in pectin, which is beneficial for preventing constipation, so I usually wash it thoroughly and eat it with the skin on.

Step 5

Sprinkle plenty of baking soda, rub the apple all over to clean it thoroughly, and then chop it into bite-sized pieces. Aim for pieces that are not too large, so they fit easily into one bite.

Step 6

I’m also using the cucumber with its skin on. It’s a good idea to trim off the very ends of the cucumber, as they can sometimes be bitter.

Step 7

Using a small spoon, carefully scrape out the seeds from the cucumber. This will result in a cleaner-tasting salad, as the seeds can sometimes make the salad watery.

Step 8

Now, slice the cucumber into bite-sized pieces.

Step 9

In a generously sized mixing bowl, combine the sliced apple, cucumber, and the boiled quail eggs.

Step 10

I’ve also prepared some raisins and almonds. (Please note that almonds may become slightly soft after being tossed with the dressing.) Adding a few raisins provides a delightful sweet and chewy element, acting as a wonderful accent to the otherwise simple salad.

Step 11

First, add a generous amount of mayonnaise – about 10 tablespoons.

Step 12

Add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice for a refreshing tang.

Step 13

For that essential sweetness, add 1 heaping tablespoon of sugar.

Step 14

Finally, add a pinch of salt to season. A little salt enhances the sweetness and boosts the overall savory flavor. (Feel free to adjust the quantities of each dressing ingredient to suit your personal taste.)

Step 15

Now, put on a pair of clean disposable gloves and gently mix everything together until the dressing is evenly distributed and all the ingredients are well combined.

Step 16

Voila! Isn’t this old-fashioned fruit salad incredibly easy to make? It reminds me of the fruit salad we often had at school lunches, and it’s just as delicious now as it was then! I thought my taste buds had changed a lot as I’ve gotten older, but some things, like this nostalgic dish, remain the same. I hope you’ll make this recipe and bring back some sweet memories too!
