Main Ingredients- 150g Noodle Tteokbokki rice cakes
- 2 sheets of thin, square fish cakes
- 4 Tbsp store-bought Tteokbokki powder sauce
- 1/4 stalk of green onion
- 2 hard-boiled eggs
- 1.5 cups (approx. 300ml) water
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Before you start cooking, give the noodle tteokbokki rice cakes a quick rinse under running water. To prevent them from sticking together and to achieve a chewier texture, it’s best to soak them in cold water for about 5 minutes. However, rinsing them right before use is also perfectly fine.
Step 2
Let’s prepare the hard-boiled eggs. Pour enough water into a pot to cover the eggs completely. Add 1 tablespoon of salt and 1 tablespoon of vinegar to the water; this helps make the eggshells easier to peel. Boil them over medium-high heat for 15 minutes, then immediately transfer them to an ice bath to cool. Once cooled, you can peel them cleanly.
Step 3
Cut the thin, square fish cakes into bite-sized pieces. You can cut them into squares for easy eating, or if you prefer a deeper flavor, cutting them into triangles is also a great option. Prepare them according to your preference.
Step 4
Now it’s time to cook the Tteokbokki! Pour 1.5 cups (about 300ml) of water into a pot and bring it to a boil over medium-high heat. Once the water is boiling, add the prepared noodle tteokbokki rice cakes, the cut fish cakes, and the hard-boiled eggs. You can also cut the eggs in half before adding them.
Step 5
Add the store-bought powdered sauce that will give the Tteokbokki its delicious flavor. Add 4 tablespoons and stir well with a spatula or spoon to ensure the sauce is evenly distributed among the rice cakes, fish cakes, and eggs. It’s important to stir occasionally to prevent the Tteokbokki from sticking to the bottom of the pot.
Step 6
As the sauce thickens and the Tteokbokki becomes glossy, it’s almost ready. Check if the rice cakes are soft and cooked through. Once it reaches your desired consistency, turn off the heat. Be careful not to overcook, as the rice cakes can become mushy.
Step 7
Finally, let’s prepare the garnish: the green onion. Split the green onion in half lengthwise, remove the tough inner core, and fold the green parts. Then, thinly julienne them. This technique will create a beautiful curl, making it visually appealing. Soak the julienned green onions in cold water for a short while, and just before serving, drain them thoroughly in a sieve to keep them fresh and crisp when placed on top.
