  • Servings : 1 serving
  • Cooking Time : Within 60 minutes
  • Difficulty : Anyone

Main Ingredients

  • 2 pieces of Garae-tteok (rice cakes, adjust thickness to your preference)
  • A little butter (enough to add flavor)

Sweet, Salty & Spicy Golden Sauce

  • 1 Tbsp sugar (adjust sweetness)
  • 0.5 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste, adjust spiciness)
  • 0.5 Tbsp soy sauce (for umami)
  • 1.5 Tbsp ketchup (for sweet & sour taste)
  • 0.3 Tbsp minced garlic (for aroma)
  • 1 Tbsp corn syrup or oligosaccharide syrup (for glaze & stickiness)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

The foundation of tteokkochi is the skewer! Insert chopsticks or wooden skewers into the garae-tteok. If the rice cakes are too large, you can cut them in half before skewering. This makes it much easier to coat with sauce and eat.

Step 1

Step 2

Now, let’s make the magic sauce! In a bowl, combine 1 Tbsp sugar, 0.5 Tbsp gochujang, 0.5 Tbsp soy sauce, 1.5 Tbsp ketchup, 0.3 Tbsp minced garlic, and 1 Tbsp corn syrup. Mix them thoroughly until all ingredients are well combined. It’s important to stir until everything is evenly blended.

Step 2

Step 3

Let’s heat up the pan for warm and tasty tteokkochi! Add a piece of butter to a frying pan and melt it slowly over low heat. Be careful not to burn the butter, and let it spread evenly across the pan.

Step 3

Step 4

Once the butter has melted, place the skewered garae-tteok in the pan and grill them until golden brown. To prevent sticking, flip them occasionally and ensure they are cooked evenly on both sides. Grilling until slightly crispy will enhance the texture.

Step 4

Step 5

When the rice cakes are sufficiently grilled, generously brush the prepared sauce onto the front side of the tteok. It’s important to keep the heat on low to prevent burning. Flip the tteok and carefully coat the back side with the sauce as well.

Step 5

Step 6

Continue to cook the tteokkochi, flipping them back and forth in the pan after applying the sauce. They are ready when the sauce coats the tteok nicely, develops a sheen, and is slightly caramelized. Be mindful of the heat to avoid burning the sauce. Enjoy the most delicious tteokkochi right when it’s warm! Enjoy your meal!
