Ingredients- 1 cup pancake mix
- 16 Vienna sausages
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1 egg
- A little cooking oil (for greasing the pan)
- 2 cups boiling water (for parboiling sausages)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s prepare the batter for our mini hot dogs. In a large bowl, combine 1 cup of pancake mix. Add 3/4 cup of milk and 1 cracked egg. Whisk everything together until you have a smooth, lump-free batter. The consistency should be similar to pancake batter – not too thick, not too thin.
Step 2
Next, prepare the Vienna sausages. To ensure they cook perfectly and don’t burst, make shallow cross-shaped cuts on the surface of each sausage with the tip of a knife. About 6-8 cuts per sausage will do. Place the scored sausages in a colander and pour 2 cups of boiling water over them to parboil. This step helps remove any casing odor and makes the sausages delightfully plump.
Step 3
After parboiling, carefully drain the sausages and pat them dry thoroughly with paper towels or a clean kitchen cloth. It’s important to remove excess moisture so the batter adheres well and to prevent oil splattering when cooking.
Step 4
Now, let’s assemble the mini hot dogs! Heat a non-stick pan over medium-low heat and lightly grease it with cooking oil, spreading it evenly with a paper towel. Ladle about one spoonful of the pancake batter onto the pan, spreading it into a round shape. Aim for a size that’s easy for little hands to hold and eat.
Step 5
Once the batter is about 70% cooked and the edges are starting to set, place one prepared Vienna sausage in the center of the batter. Quickly wrap the batter around the sausage, creating a neat parcel. Gently roll the hot dog in the pan, turning it occasionally, until all sides are golden brown and cooked through. Keep the heat on medium-low to ensure it cooks evenly without burning.
Step 6
When your mini hot dogs are beautifully golden and cooked, they’re ready to serve! Transfer them to a plate while they are warm. They make a fantastic snack for kids or even a light brunch option. Serve with ketchup or mustard for extra deliciousness!
