Main Ingredients

  • 300g ground pork
  • 1 block tofu (approx. 300g)
  • 1/2 onion
  • 1/2 carrot
  • 1 stalk green onion

Seasoning & Sauce

  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • 1 Tbsp cornstarch (mixed with 2 Tbsp water)
  • 1 cup water (200ml)
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Let’s start by preparing the ingredients. Finely mince the carrot and onion. Mincing them as small as possible is key for the kids to eat them easily. Chop the green onion, separating the white and green parts. Cube the tofu into about 1.5cm pieces. Have the ground pork ready for immediate use.

Step 1

Step 2

Shall we start stir-frying? Heat a pan over medium heat, add 1 Tbsp of olive oil, and sauté the minced garlic for about 30 seconds until fragrant. A subtle garlic aroma makes the dish even more delicious. Be careful not to burn the garlic.

Step 2

Step 3

Once the garlic is fragrant, add the ground pork and stir-fry. It’s important to break up the pork as you cook to prevent clumps. Stir-fry until the pork turns brown, then season with a pinch of black pepper to remove any gamey smell.

Step 3

Step 4

After the pork is fully cooked, add the minced onion and carrot and stir-fry together. Cook until the vegetables become slightly translucent. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking to the bottom of the pan.

Step 4

Step 5

Add 2 Tbsp of soy sauce and 2 Tbsp of oyster sauce to the stir-fried vegetables and pork, mixing well to combine the flavors. Then, add the cubed tofu and 1 cup (200ml) of water. Bring to a simmer over medium-low heat. Gently stir to avoid breaking the tofu as it simmers. Let it cook for about 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Step 5

Step 6

This is the final step! Gradually add the cornstarch slurry (1 Tbsp cornstarch mixed with 2 Tbsp water) while stirring to thicken the sauce to your desired consistency. The sauce will thicken as it boils. Once it reaches the right consistency, turn off the heat and garnish with the chopped green onions. Your delicious Mapo Donburi is ready! Serve generously over warm rice and enjoy.
