Mentaiko Ochazuke
Super Simple Mentaiko Ochazuke in 3 Easy Steps
Looking for a comforting and quick meal to start your day? This dish is a soothing Japanese rice soup, Ochazuke, elevated with the savory flavor of Mentaiko (spicy cod roe). It’s perfect for a light yet satisfying breakfast that will gently wake up your palate and leave you feeling refreshed.
Ingredients- 3 Tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 strand Mentaiko (spicy cod roe, approx. 50-70g)
- 1 bowl cooked rice (approx. 200g)
- 1 packet Furikake (rice seasoning, choose your favorite)
- 150ml Green tea broth (or 1 green tea bag steeped in hot water)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Heat 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Place the Mentaiko strand in the pan and sear it on both sides until golden brown. The key is to get a slightly crispy exterior while keeping the inside moist and flavorful; you want to hear the gentle popping sound as it cooks. Sear for about 2-3 minutes per side. Once cooked, cut the Mentaiko into bite-sized pieces or leave it whole, as preferred.
Step 2
Transfer the warm cooked rice into a deep bowl. Sprinkle your favorite Furikake generously over the rice. Furikake adds a wonderful savory depth and aroma. Next, arrange the seared Mentaiko pieces attractively on top of the rice. Placing it in the center or slightly off to the side can make the dish look even more appealing.
Step 3
Finally, gently pour 150ml of hot green tea broth (or water steeped with a green tea bag) over the rice and Mentaiko. The steam from the hot broth will meld the flavors together, creating a wonderfully smooth and comforting soup. Gently mix everything with your chopsticks or spoon. The salty Mentaiko, savory Furikake, and subtle green tea aroma combine for a truly delicious and simple meal. Enjoy this delightful and easy-to-make dish!
