Essential Ingredients

  • 4 String cheese sticks (long, stick-shaped cheese)
  • Generous amount of cooking oil (for deep frying)

Dough Ingredients

  • 500g Donut mix powder (or substitute with all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt)
  • 1 Egg (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup Water (approx. 100ml, for adjusting dough consistency)
  • 4 Tbsp Cooking oil (added to dough for tenderness)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the star of our cheese balls: the string cheese. Cut each string cheese stick into approximately three equal pieces. This bite-sized portion ensures the cheese melts perfectly inside without leaking out during frying, creating an exquisite cheese pull.

Step 1

Step 2

Next, let’s make the chewy dough. In a large bowl, crack one egg. Add the measured 1/2 cup of water and 4 tablespoons of cooking oil. Whisk everything together with a whisk or fork until well combined and smooth.

Step 2

Step 3

Pour the 500g of donut mix powder into the bowl with the wet ingredients. Mix with a spatula or your hands until a dough forms and no dry powder remains. It might seem crumbly at first, but continue mixing until it comes together into a cohesive ball. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more mix powder; if it’s too stiff, add a tiny bit more water. Knead until you achieve a smooth, elastic dough consistency.

Step 3

Step 4

Divide the dough into portions of about 30g each. Flatten each portion into a disk in the palm of your hand. Place one piece of the prepared string cheese in the center of the dough. Carefully pinch the edges of the dough together to completely enclose the cheese, ensuring there are no gaps. Once sealed, gently roll the dough between your palms to form a smooth, round ball. A neat shape will ensure they look appealing after frying.

Step 4

Step 5

Now for the exciting part – frying! Pour a generous amount of cooking oil into a deep pan and heat it over medium-low heat. It’s crucial not to use high heat, as this will burn the outside before the inside is cooked. Once the oil is moderately hot, carefully add the cheese balls. Fry them, gently turning them occasionally, until they are golden brown and puffed up. They are ready when the cheese inside is melted and becomes visible through the dough, and the exterior is golden and crisp. Transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve them warm for the ultimate stretchy cheese experience!
