Main Ingredients- 300g Tteokbokki rice cakes (tteok)
- 4 rectangular fish cakes (eomuk)
- 5 Vienna sausages
Spicy-Sweet Sauce- 3 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes – adjust to your spice preference)
- 2 Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 3 Tbsp Sugar (adjust sweetness)
- 2 cups Water (approx. 400ml)
- 1 Tbsp Flavor Enhancer (Optional: Dashida, ramen broth powder, Yeondu, Sanduae broth, etc.)
- 3 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes – adjust to your spice preference)
- 2 Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 3 Tbsp Sugar (adjust sweetness)
- 2 cups Water (approx. 400ml)
- 1 Tbsp Flavor Enhancer (Optional: Dashida, ramen broth powder, Yeondu, Sanduae broth, etc.)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Prepare 300g of tteokbokki rice cakes (tteok). If any are stuck together, gently separate them. Rinse the tteok once under cold water before use. (Both soft rice cakes (mil-tteok) and chewy rice cakes (ssal-tteok) can be used; cooking time may vary slightly depending on the type.)
Step 2
Cut the 4 rectangular fish cakes (eomuk) into bite-sized pieces, about 3-4 cm. You can cut them smaller if you’re serving to children.
Step 3
Prepare 5 Vienna sausages. Make 2-3 slits on each sausage with a knife. This helps the sauce penetrate better and makes them look appealing.
Step 4
Now, let’s make the sauce that makes tteokbokki so delicious! In a mixing bowl, combine 3 Tbsp gochujang, 1 Tbsp gochugaru, 2 Tbsp soy sauce, and 3 Tbsp sugar. Add 2 cups (400ml) of water and mix well. For an extra boost of umami, you can add about 1 Tbsp of a flavor enhancer like Dashida, ramen broth powder, Yeondu, or Sanduae broth. (This is one of the secrets behind delicious cafeteria tteokbokki!) I’m adding 1 Tbsp of Sanduae broth.
Step 5
Pour the prepared sauce into a pot and bring it to a boil over medium heat. Once the sauce starts to bubble vigorously, proceed to the next step.
Step 6
Once the sauce is boiling, add the tteokbokki rice cakes first. Let them cook in the sauce, allowing them to soften and absorb the flavors. (Tteok takes longer to cook than fish cakes or sausages.) The delicious aroma of tteokbokki will start to fill your kitchen now!
Step 7
When the tteok are semi-cooked, add the sliced fish cakes and the scored Vienna sausages. Continue to simmer for another 2-3 minutes, allowing all the ingredients to meld with the sauce. Your delicious tteokbokki is almost ready!
Step 8
The finished tteokbokki will have a nice kick from the gochujang and gochugaru, making it spicier than you might expect, but the flavor is absolutely incredible! You can enjoy a taste that’s far superior to store-bought tteokbokki, and healthier too. It might take a little effort, but it’s worth it!
Step 9
Enjoy this dish while it’s hot! Eating the chewy tteok with the tender fish cakes and bouncy sausages together is pure bliss. The combination of textures and flavors is fantastic. Yum, yum, it’s so delicious!
Step 10
This is that familiar, comforting, and oh-so-delicious taste of tteokbokki we all know and love! It’s the kind of taste that’s so good, it’s almost dangerous. I wish I had also boiled some eggs to add! If you happen to have any leftover tteokbokki, sprinkle generously with mozzarella cheese and microwave for 2 minutes the next day. It’ll be like freshly made tteokbokki! Enjoy making this delightful dish whenever you’re craving some Korean street food!
