Ingredients- 2 slices of bread
- 4 Vienna sausages (e.g., Bratwurst)
- Butter, for cooking
- 1 egg
- 1 Tbsp milk
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Carefully trim off the crusts from the slices of bread using a knife. (It’s best to remove these as they can make the toast dry and hard later on.)
Step 2
Place the bread slices on a clean cutting board or work surface. Using a rolling pin or the bottom of a bottle, gently but firmly press down on the bread, rolling it flat without tearing it. This will make it much easier to roll up the sausages.
Step 3
Cut each flattened bread slice in half crosswise to create smaller rectangular pieces, each large enough to wrap around one sausage. This size is perfect for children to handle and enjoy.
Step 4
In a small bowl, crack 1 egg and add 1 tablespoon of milk. Whisk together with a fork or whisk until smooth and well combined, ensuring there are no lumps. This egg wash will help the bread wrap securely around the sausage and give it a lovely golden-brown color and a richer flavor when cooked.
Step 5
Place one sausage onto each prepared piece of bread, positioning it along the longer edge.
Step 6
Starting from the edge with the sausage, tightly roll the bread around the sausage. Stop just before you reach the end of the bread. Brush the remaining exposed bread edge with the prepared egg wash. This acts like a ‘glue’ to seal the roll shut.
Step 7
Carefully bring the egg-washed edge over to complete the roll, pressing gently to seal. Place the sausage rolls seam-side down in the pan for easier cooking.
Step 8
Melt a generous amount of butter in a non-stick pan over medium-low heat. Place the sausage rolls seam-side down and cook, turning occasionally, until all sides are golden brown and crispy. They should be heated through and golden on the outside. Serve hot with your favorite condiments like ketchup or mustard!
