Irresistible Onion Tteokbokki

Irresistible Onion Tteokbokki

Addictive Onion Tteokbokki (We tried not to use ‘addictive,’ but we had to!)

This Tteokbokki is truly captivating! My husband named it ‘Onion (Addictive) Tteokbokki’ because he couldn’t get enough. Finely julienned onions seamlessly blend with the chewy tteokbokki rice cakes, adding a wonderful moisture and sweetness. It’s also a nutritional powerhouse! The way the tender onions cling to the chewy rice cakes creates a delightful texture that’s simply irresistible.

Main Ingredients
  • Tteokbokki rice cakes 1 bowl (approx. 300g)
  • Onion 1/3 medium

Seasoning
  • Soy sauce 3 Tbsp
  • Sugar 3 Tbsp
  • Sesame seeds 1 Tbsp
  • Black sesame seeds 1/2 Tbsp

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare 1/3 of an onion. Peel and wash it thoroughly, then slice it into very thin julienne strips. Rinsing the sliced onions briefly under cold water and draining them will help maintain their crisp texture.

Step 2

Now, heat a pan over medium heat. Once the pan is warm, add cooking oil, enough to coat the bottom, to prevent sticking.

Step 3

Add the tteokbokki rice cakes to the heated pan. Then, add 3 tablespoons of soy sauce and 3 tablespoons of sugar. It’s important to stir-fry everything together from the beginning so that the sauce is well absorbed by the rice cakes. Stir frequently to prevent burning.

Step 4

As you stir-fry the rice cakes, the sauce may thicken and become dry. To ensure the rice cakes are cooked through and the flavors meld well, it’s a good idea to add a little water. I added about 3 tablespoons of water to keep it moist. Adjust the amount of water based on how the pan is cooking and the doneness of the rice cakes.

Step 5

Once the rice cakes are tender and cooked, add all the thinly sliced onion strips to the pan. Adding the onions will significantly enhance the overall flavor.

Step 6

Now, stir-fry until the onions are well incorporated with the rice cakes. The key is to cook them until the onion’s sweetness infuses into the rice cakes, and the onions cling to the chewy rice cakes. I stir-fried for about 5 minutes, but the cooking time can vary depending on the heat level. Cook until the onions are slightly softened and well combined with the rice cakes.

Step 7

Finally, add 1 tablespoon of sesame seeds and 1/2 tablespoon of black sesame seeds for a nutty flavor, and mix gently. Adding sesame seeds also makes the tteokbokki look more appetizing.

Step 8

Just before turning off the heat, drizzle in 1 tablespoon of sesame oil generously to enhance the aroma. If you use freshly pressed sesame oil, the nutty fragrance will be absolutely divine! Once the sesame oil is added, the cooking is complete.

Step 9

Voila! Your delicious Onion Tteokbokki, designed to stimulate your appetite, is ready. Enjoy the fantastic combination of chewy rice cakes and sweet onions right away!
