I recently bought a bunch of fresh scallions from the market, and I thought it would be helpful to show you how to prep and store them properly. You don’t need much – just a cutting board, scallions, an airtight container, and paper towels. With these simple tools, anyone can easily prepare and store scallions like a pro! Step 1
First, select fresh and vibrant scallions. Choosing good quality scallions is the first step to ensuring they last longer and add great flavor to your dishes.

Using a knife, trim off the root end of the scallions. Be careful not to cut too much; you just need to remove the very bottom part.

Gently peel away any outer layers that are dirty, wilted, or discolored. This step not only makes the scallions look cleaner but also helps in preserving their freshness.

Scallions have a distinct point where the white stem transitions to the green leaves. Measure about 3 cm down from this point on the white stem and carefully slice the scallion in half lengthwise. This makes them easier to handle and chop for cooking.

Next, take the green leafy part and cut it lengthwise as well, matching the length of the white stem sections. This ensures uniformity, making them easier to use later.

Essentially, you’ll divide each scallion stalk into three sections lengthwise. This preparatory step makes storage and cooking much more convenient.

Now, carefully inspect the scallions. If any of the green leaves appear yellowed or unhealthy, trim them off. This ensures you’re only storing and using the best parts.

For the white stem part, if the outermost layer looks damaged or soft, peel it away gently like you would peel a vegetable. We want to keep only the firm, fresh parts.

Once prepped, rinse the scallions under cold running water to remove any dirt or debris. After washing, it’s crucial to pat them thoroughly dry with paper towels or a clean kitchen towel. Excess moisture can lead to premature spoilage.

Time to store them! Line the bottom of an airtight container with a layer of paper towels. Place the dried scallions on top. Then, add another layer of paper towels over the scallions. These paper towels will absorb excess moisture, keeping the scallions crisp for longer. Finally, seal the container tightly with its lid. Storage ready!
