How to Boil Potatoes in a Pot: Easy and Delicious
Steamed Potatoes, Boiled Potatoes: Pot Boiling Method, Time, and Calorie Information
I’m enjoying meals with seasonal ingredients these days. I have a whole box of potatoes, so it feels like I’m eating them every day! Today, I made steamed and boiled potatoes, and they were delicious, as expected from seasonal produce. The abundance of potatoes is a bit daunting, but I’m diligently enjoying them. This made me curious about their calorie content. Can I eat them without worry? I usually assume it’s fine since I eat them instead of rice, but let me share the facts. Raw potatoes have about 66 calories per 100g, while steamed potatoes are a bit higher at 86 calories per 100g. A medium-sized potato, typically boiled, is around 130 calories, so keep that in mind. It’s great as a rice substitute, but as they say, moderation is key, right? Enjoy your delicious potatoes and have a healthy and happy meal!
Ingredients- Fresh potatoes
- Salt, a pinch
- Sugar, a pinch (optional)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
To share with my husband and Sra for dinner tonight, I’ll be boiling 7 potatoes.
Step 2
These aren’t overly large potatoes. While you can boil them with the skin on, I prefer to peel them for easier eating and a fluffier texture. After peeling, wash the potato flesh thoroughly under running water.
Step 3
Prepare your pot and add enough water to cover the peeled potatoes. Bring the water to a boil over high heat.
Step 4
Once the water is boiling, add half a tablespoon of salt. Salt enhances the potato’s flavor and helps them cook faster.
Step 5
If you’d like a touch of sweetness, add 1 tablespoon of sugar. (The original recipe mentions ‘half a spoonful of Nusu’, but regular sugar can be substituted. You can also omit it if you prefer.) Stir the salted and sugared water well, then add the potatoes and let them simmer until tender.
Step 6
Cover the pot with a lid and let the potatoes cook. When the water has reduced by about half, carefully flip the potatoes. This ensures even cooking. Continue to maintain high heat while they bubble and cook.
Step 7
For about 7 potatoes, 30 minutes of boiling should be sufficient to achieve delicious steamed potatoes. Once the water has significantly reduced, lower the heat to medium-low. Be careful not to let it burn.
Step 8
When the water has almost completely evaporated and the potatoes are tender, they are perfectly cooked. This pot boiling method, taking about 30 minutes, yields wonderfully fluffy boiled potatoes! They’re already seasoned with salt and sugar, so they’re ready to eat, but Sra likes to dip hers in extra sugar.
Step 9
These boiled potatoes are so fluffy and delicious, thanks to them being in season! I only planned to eat one, but I ended up eating three – the fullness is incredible! They’re so tasty that my hand kept reaching for more. Considering their calories, I should probably eat them in moderation. (This article is part of the ‘Good Parent Master Widget Mission’ series.)
