Let’s gather the ingredients for making delicious, honey-sweet roasted sweet potatoes at home! With an oven, anyone can achieve this delightful treat.
Step 2
First, select your sweet potatoes, the star of our dish. I’ve chosen 5 Japanese yam sweet potatoes for their sweetness and soft texture, but chestnut sweet potatoes are also a fantastic choice! Thoroughly wash the sweet potatoes under cold running water to remove any dirt. You don’t need to cut off the ends. Once washed and patted dry, they’re ready to go. Before you begin roasting, preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F) for at least 20 minutes.
Step 3
Now, we’ll roast the 5 washed Japanese yam sweet potatoes in the preheated oven. Get your baking sheet ready.
Step 4
Place a sheet of parchment paper or baking paper onto the oven tray. This prevents the sweet potatoes from sticking and makes cleanup much easier.
Step 5
Arrange the 5 Japanese yam sweet potatoes on the parchment-lined baking sheet, making sure to leave some space between them so they can roast evenly. Adequate spacing is key for uniform cooking.

Place the sweet potatoes into the preheated 200°C (400°F) oven and bake for 30 minutes. Keep in mind that oven temperatures can vary, so it’s always a good idea to check on them periodically.

After 30 minutes, carefully remove the sweet potatoes from the oven and flip them over. Turning them ensures that both sides are beautifully roasted. Return them to the 200°C (400°F) oven and bake for another 30 minutes.
Step 8
After a total of 1 hour of baking, open the oven and test for doneness by inserting a wooden skewer or fork into the thickest part of a sweet potato. If it slides in easily, they are perfectly cooked through! If they still seem a bit firm, continue baking for an additional 10 minutes. For an extra caramelized and golden finish, I reduced the temperature slightly to 190°C (375°F) and baked for another 10 minutes.

Can you see the sweet honey naturally oozing out of the sweet potatoes inside the oven? They look incredibly appetizing! When removing the sweet potatoes, which have been baked at 190°C (375°F) for 10 minutes, remember that the baking tray will be very hot. Always wear oven mitts for safety.
Step 10
Voilà! After a total of 1 hour and 10 minutes of careful baking, your honey-sweet roasted sweet potatoes are ready. Since they are very hot, wear cotton gloves or oven mitts when handling them, and carefully transfer them to a serving plate.

To enhance the presentation and evoke the feeling of street-side vendors, you can place a piece of shiny aluminum foil on your serving plate before arranging the sweet potatoes. It adds a lovely, festive touch!
