Homemade Thick Greek Yogurt
Unlock the Secret to Thick, Creamy Greek Yogurt Without Gelatin!
Store-bought Greek yogurt can be quite pricey, making it a treat you can’t always afford. But guess what? You can easily make thick and dense Greek yogurt at home by simply straining the whey from regular yogurt! It’s surprisingly simple and yields a wonderfully rich texture. Let’s get started!
Ingredients- 2 cartons (approx. 1kg total) unsweetened plain yogurt
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, gather your essential tools: a clean mixing bowl, a fine-mesh sieve (or strainer), cheesecloth (or coffee filters), and your yogurt. It’s a good idea to briefly rinse the cheesecloth in hot water for hygiene.
Step 2
Place the sieve over the clean mixing bowl. Then, spread the cheesecloth generously inside the sieve, making sure it lines the entire colander. Pour both cartons of your unsweetened plain yogurt into the cheesecloth-lined sieve.
Step 3
Gather the corners of the cheesecloth together, forming a pouch, and secure it tightly with a kitchen clip or a rubber band to prevent the yogurt from leaking. For better whey separation, place a bowl filled with water on top of the tied cheesecloth to add weight. Finally, cover the entire setup with plastic wrap for easy transfer to the refrigerator.
Step 4
Now, place the plastic-wrapped yogurt in the refrigerator and let it strain for at least 8 to 9 hours. During this time, the whey will gradually drip into the bowl below, leaving behind a thick, dense Greek yogurt in the cheesecloth. You can adjust the straining time based on your desired consistency. Enjoy your homemade Greek yogurt!
