Homemade Tangerine Syrup
How to Make Homemade Tangerine Syrup: Packed with Vitamin C!
Today, we’re making tangerine syrup, rich in Vitamin C and great for bone health! Tangerines are abundant in the market right now, and while they’re deliciously sweet and sour on their own, tangerine syrup can be enjoyed in so many ways – mixed with yogurt, milk, brewed as tea, or made into ade. It’s perfect for when you have plenty of tangerines! For the sweetener, you can choose between honey, corn syrup, or sugar based on your personal preference. If you plan to store it for a long time, increase the sugar amount; if you intend to consume it quickly, you can reduce the sugar.
Tangerine Syrup Ingredients
- 600g Fresh Tangerines
- 450g Sugar (granulated or brown sugar, adjust to taste)
- 1 Tbsp Lemon Juice (optional, for preservation)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, thoroughly wash the glass jar you’ll be using for the tangerine syrup and then sterilize it by boiling it in water. Proper sterilization is key to extending the shelf life of your syrup.
Step 2
If you plan to use the tangerine peels in your syrup, wash them meticulously with baking soda and vinegar, then briefly blanch them in boiling water. However, for versatility in various dishes, I chose to peel the tangerines.
Step 3
After peeling the tangerines, remove any seeds and cut them into appropriate sizes.
Step 4
Take half of the prepared tangerines and blend them in a blender until smooth. This will infuse the syrup with a more intense tangerine flavor.
Step 5
For the remaining half of the tangerines, cut them in half and then carefully separate the segments. This will add a delightful texture to your syrup.
Step 6
Combine the blended tangerine puree and the separated tangerine segments in a bowl.
Step 7
Add the sugar and mix well. While a 1:1 ratio of fruit to sugar is common for syrups, I’ve reduced the sugar content slightly to make it less intensely sweet, allowing for more versatile use in cooking beyond just tea. If you prefer a sweeter tangerine syrup, feel free to increase the amount of sugar.
Step 8
Add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. Lemon juice has preservative qualities and is beneficial when making jams or syrups to help extend their shelf life. Mix everything thoroughly and let it sit for a while to allow the sugar to dissolve. Stir occasionally. Once the sugar has completely dissolved, carefully transfer the tangerine syrup into the sterilized glass jar. Your delicious homemade tangerine syrup is now ready to enjoy!
