  • 4 sheets of seaweed (nori)
  • 1 can medium-sized Spam
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • A pinch of sesame seeds
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Hello everyone! Today, we’re going to make simple yet incredibly delicious Spam Musubi. Its neat square shape makes it a special lunch option that both kids and adults will adore. Shall we get started?

Step 1

Step 2

First, let’s gather all the necessary ingredients. You’ll need 2 bowls of warm cooked rice, 4 sheets of seaweed (nori), 1 can of medium-sized Spam, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, a pinch of sesame seeds, 4 eggs, and 1 tablespoon of sesame oil for that lovely nutty aroma. With these, you can prepare a satisfying Musubi lunch box.

Step 2

Step 3

Now, let’s prepare the egg sheets, which will add color and texture. It’s best to fry them in a square pan to match the shape of the Kimbap. Aim for a thickness similar to the sliced Spam. Also, slice the Spam into appropriate pieces for the Musubi. If they’re too thick, it might be difficult to roll.

Step 3

Step 4

Next, fry the sliced Spam in a pan until it’s golden brown. This enhances Spam’s savory flavor and aroma. Lightly pat the fried Spam with a paper towel to remove excess grease for a cleaner taste.

Step 4

Step 5

Time to prepare the seaweed. Cut each sheet in half, making them easier to roll. In a bowl, combine the 2 bowls of warm rice with 1/2 teaspoon of salt, a pinch of sesame seeds, and 1 tablespoon of sesame oil. Mix well to season the rice evenly. Line a Spam can with plastic wrap, leaving some overhang. This will help shape the Musubi later.

Step 5

Step 6

Now, let’s layer the ingredients inside the plastic-wrapped Spam can. The general order is: seasoned rice → egg sheet → fried Spam → more seasoned rice. Press down firmly with your hands after adding each layer to compact the ingredients and shape them.

Step 6

Step 7

Once all the ingredients are layered, use the plastic wrap to firmly press and shape the entire block. Make sure to pack it tightly within the can so that the Musubi holds its shape well when sliced.

Step 7

Step 8

Carefully lift the shaped rice block out of the can using the plastic wrap. Place it in the center of a prepared seaweed sheet. Gently unwrap the plastic while rolling the seaweed around the rice block, similar to how you would roll Kimbap. Roll it tightly; a loose roll will cause the Musubi to fall apart when sliced.

Step 8

Step 9

And here’s the beautifully rolled Musubi! It has a neat, square shape, just like well-made Kimbap. You can eat it like this, but let’s slice it for easier enjoyment.

Step 9

Step 10

Slice the completed Musubi log into pieces of appropriate thickness. About 1.5 to 2 cm thick is ideal; slices that are too thin might crumble. And there you have it – delicious Spam Musubi square Kimbap is ready! It makes for a hearty and satisfying meal anytime.
