Essential Ingredients- 1 Mini Baguette
- 3 slices Salty House Jambon (thinly sliced cured ham)
- 2 slices Unsalted Butter (approx. 1/2 inch thick)
- 1 Tbsp Mayonnaise
- A pinch of Whole Grain Mustard (optional)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Let’s learn about Jambon! Jambon is thinly sliced cured ham, typically from the leg, commonly used in sandwiches and salads. It has a distinct delicate flavor compared to Italian pancetta (similar to bacon) or guanciale (from the pork jowl) used in Carbonara.
Step 2
The foundation of a great Jambon-Beurre is the bread! Mini baguettes, readily available at most bakeries, are perfect for this. They’re easier to slice and handle than large baguettes. Using a serrated bread knife, slice the baguette lengthwise. You can lightly hollow out the crumb for more filling, but keeping it intact allows you to fully enjoy the bread’s crust and texture. (Trust me, I’m a bread lover!)
Step 3
Our star ingredient today is Jambon from ‘Salty House’! Delivered fresh, it’s incredibly thin and delicate, almost to the point of tearing. A typical pack contains about 8 slices, which is generous for a single sandwich.
Step 4
Now, for the flavor-enhancing spread! Instead of regular mayonnaise, I highly recommend ‘Aioli Sauce’ (my current favorite). Aioli is a Spanish-style garlic mayonnaise, and its robust garlic kick combined with a creamy texture is a perfect match for Jambon-Beurre. (Purchased this myself!)
Step 5
Spreading butter directly on the bread is a classic Parisian style, as seen on YouTube channels like ‘Fabien’. While some might insert butter slices inside, spreading it directly on the bread imparts a more natural and delicious flavor.
Step 6
Time to assemble! Spread a thin layer of lemon dill butter (or regular unsalted butter) on one half of the baguette’s interior. On the other half, generously apply the prepared Aioli Sauce. If your butter is too hard to spread, a quick 10-second zap in the microwave will soften it perfectly.
Step 7
Layer the thin slices of Jambon onto the buttered side. Using at least three slices ensures you get that rich, savory ham flavor and satisfying texture in every bite.
Step 8
Honestly, you could even use four slices! The jambon is so thin that layering multiple slices creates a wonderful melt-in-your-mouth experience.
Step 9
Once generously filled, gently place the other half of the baguette on top. Voila! Your perfect Jambon-Beurre is ready.
Step 10
Take a bite, and experience the perfect symphony: the soft baguette, the rich butter, and the savory, flavorful jambon. It’s truly a moment of culinary bliss!
Step 11
For an extra twist, add a touch of whole grain mustard or a generous spoonful of carrot remoulade (carotte râpée) for a ‘Carrot Remoulade Jambon-Beurre Sandwich’. It offers a delightful variation.
Step 12
The combination of crunchy carrot remoulade and the rich Jambon-Beurre makes for an incredibly satisfying weekend brunch that you’ll want to keep eating!
