  • Occasion : Everyday
  • Cooking : Mixed (Bibim-style)
  • Servings : 4 servings
  • Difficulty : Anyone

Core Ingredients

  • 3 ripe avocados
  • 1 ripe tomato (optional)
  • 1/2 red bell pepper
  • 2/3 cucumber
  • 1/2 small onion
  • 1 tbsp finely chopped jalapeño
  • 1/2 tsp salt (or to taste)
  • Pinch of black pepper (to taste)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

When selecting avocados, choose ones that aren’t too hard. They should yield slightly to gentle pressure and feel soft, not mushy. Ripe avocados often have a deep purplish-red skin.

Step 1

Step 2

Cut the avocado in half lengthwise. To safely remove the pit, carefully strike it with the heel of your knife and twist. Then, use a spoon to scoop the flesh out of the skin.

Step 2

Step 3

If you’re using a tomato, score its skin with a cross shape (+) using a knife. This makes it easier to peel.

Step 3

Step 4

Place the scored tomato in a bowl and carefully pour in boiling water. Let it sit for a minute or two to loosen the skin. While the tomato is blanching, start preparing your other vegetables.

Step 4

Step 5

Finely dice the onion, bell pepper, and cucumber. If using jalapeño, remove the seeds and membranes for less heat, then mince it finely. Adjust the amount of jalapeño based on your spice preference.

Step 5

Step 6

Once the tomato skin has loosened, carefully remove it under cold running water. This stops the cooking process and makes peeling easier.

Step 6

Step 7

Don’t worry if peeling the tomato feels like too much work! You can skip this step if you prefer. The guacamole will still be delicious, skin and all.

Step 7

Step 8

Place the scooped avocado flesh into a bowl. Using a fork or a potato masher, coarsely mash the avocado. Aim for a chunky texture rather than a completely smooth purée.

Step 8

Step 9

For a smoother consistency, gently press down on the mashed avocado with the back of your fork or a spoon to break up any larger lumps. (Note: The original ‘hit with a hammer’ step seems to be a mistranslation or unconventional method; mashing with a fork or tool is standard.)

Step 9

Step 10

Add the finely diced onion, bell pepper, cucumber, and jalapeño to the bowl with the mashed avocado. Season with salt and pepper. It’s best to start with a smaller amount and add more later if needed.

Step 10

Step 11

Squeeze the juice from half a lemon over the mixture. Lemon juice not only adds a bright, fresh flavor but also helps prevent the avocado from browning.

Step 11

Step 12

Gently fold all the ingredients together using a spatula or spoon until well combined. Make sure to mash the avocado slightly as you mix to incorporate it fully. Taste the guacamole and adjust the seasoning – add more salt if it’s bland or more lemon juice if it needs more tang. Your delicious homemade guacamole is now ready to serve!
