Dough Ingredients

  • 1 packet of Hotteok mix powder
  • About 200ml warm water (slightly less than indicated on the mix packet)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Prepare about 200ml of warm water. Dissolve the yeast packet included in the Hotteok mix into the water. (Tip: The Hotteok mix recipe usually calls for 250ml of water, but we’re using slightly less to prevent the dough from becoming too sticky, making it easier to roll. Adjust the water amount as needed while kneading.)

Step 1

Step 2

Pour the Hotteok mix powder into a bowl. Add the dissolved yeast water and knead for about 5 minutes until you achieve a smooth dough. Place the dough in a plastic bag and let it rest in a cool place for about 30 minutes to let it ferment and become chewier.

Step 2

Step 3

Finely mince the onion. Mincing it finely ensures a pleasant texture when cooked; large pieces can be unpleasant.

Step 3

Step 4

In a bowl, combine the minced onion and the well-drained canned corn. Add 5 tablespoons of mayonnaise, a pinch of black pepper, and a pinch of dried parsley. Mix everything together to create the filling. (Tip: For an extra creamy and savory filling, you can mix in a little cream cheese along with the mayonnaise.)

Step 4

Step 5

Divide the rested dough into manageable portions. Lightly dust your work surface with flour (or a little cooking oil), and roll out each portion thinly with a rolling pin. Place a small bowl upside down on the dough and press down to create round, flat discs, similar to dumpling wrappers. (Tip: Feel free to adjust the size of the dough discs according to your preference. Smaller, bite-sized versions are also very cute for kids!)

Step 5

Step 6

Line your air fryer basket with parchment paper. Place the rolled-out dough discs onto the parchment paper. It’s best to leave a little space between each disc to prevent them from sticking together during cooking.

Step 6

Step 7

Place a sausage onto each flattened dough disc and carefully roll the dough around the sausage, ensuring it’s fully enclosed. Tuck in the ends to prevent the sausage from escaping during baking.

Step 7

Step 8

The ideal sausage size is about the diameter of a pen, or slightly smaller. If they are too thick, the dough may not cook through properly.

Step 8

Step 9

Pinch the edges of the dough together firmly to seal the sausage completely inside. This is crucial to ensure the sausage stays put while it bakes.

Step 9

Step 10

Slice the sausage-wrapped dough into about 10 equal pieces. If the knife sticks to the dough, lightly oiling the blade can help create cleaner cuts.

Step 10

Step 11

Arrange the sliced sausage bun pieces in a circular pattern inside the air fryer basket, much like arranging flower petals. This presentation makes them visually appealing, especially for children.

Step 11

Step 12

Fill the central space of the arranged buns with the prepared onion and corn mixture. Generously filling the center makes for a more substantial and flavorful bite.

Step 12

Step 13

Now, top generously with mozzarella cheese! You can also add ketchup or mustard drizzle to your liking. (Tip: For a golden-brown finish, brush the top of the dough lightly with egg wash before adding the cheese.)

Step 13

Step 14

Preheat your air fryer to 180°C (350°F). Place the sausage buns inside and bake for about 12 minutes. (Tip: If your air fryer is already preheated, you might only need 10 minutes for subsequent batches. Check for doneness and bake for an additional 1-2 minutes if needed.)

Step 14

Step 15

For an extra crispy texture, let the buns cool completely, then flip them over and bake for another 10 minutes. You can prepare these buns ahead of time, cool them, and store them in the refrigerator. When ready to serve, top with fresh mozzarella cheese and bake for about 5 more minutes for a fresh-baked taste.

Step 15

Step 16

Voila! Your delicious homemade sausage buns are ready. (Tip: Cooking times and temperatures may vary slightly depending on your air fryer model. It’s always a good idea to check them periodically and adjust accordingly. Remember to reduce the cooking time if your air fryer is preheated.)
