Blueberry Compote Ingredients
  • 150g fresh blueberries
  • 50g sugar (granulated or brown)
  • 2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice (approx. 30ml)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare 150g of fresh blueberries. Measure them out and gently rinse under cool running water, then pat dry. Don’t worry too much about the natural whitish bloom on blueberries.

Step 2

Measure out 50g of sugar, which will add sweetness and help thicken the compote. Granulated sugar will give a clean sweetness, while brown sugar will add a richer flavor.

Step 3

Place the rinsed blueberries in a saucepan. Add all 50g of sugar. Gently toss the blueberries and sugar together with a spatula or spoon until combined. Let the mixture sit for about 30 minutes. This allows the blueberries to release their juices, starting the process of dissolving the sugar.

Step 4

After 30 minutes, you’ll notice that the sugar has begun to dissolve in the released blueberry juices, forming a clear, sweet syrup. The blueberries will have softened and started to plump up.

Step 5

Now, place the saucepan over medium-low to low heat and begin to cook the blueberry compote. Let it simmer gently for the first 7 minutes. Be careful not to use high heat, as it can cause the compote to burn easily.

Step 6

While the compote is simmering, it’s crucial to stir it continuously and gently with a spatula to prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the pot. Stir carefully to avoid mashing the blueberries too much, as they will naturally break down as they cook.

Step 7

Once the compote starts to thicken slightly, add 2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice. The lemon juice adds a refreshing tartness and brightens the overall flavor of the compote.

Step 8

After adding the lemon juice, continue to simmer for about 3 more minutes, for a total cooking time of approximately 10 minutes. Your delicious blueberry compote is almost ready! Cook until it reaches your desired consistency; remember it will thicken further as it cools.

Step 9

Allow the finished blueberry compote to cool completely before storing. It’s wonderful used as a filling or topping for cakes, or spread generously over warm toast or bread for a delightful treat. It also makes a healthy and tasty addition to plain yogurt.
