I made curry at home after a long time! Watching Mukbang of Spam curry by ‘Ipjjalbeunhaetnim’ made me crave curry even more. So, I decided to make a generous canned ham curry using the canned ham I had in the fridge (it’s not Spam, though!). This rich and spicy curry is best enjoyed with rice and kimchi. It was absolutely delicious with green onion kimchi, young napa cabbage kimchi, and cucumber kimchi! It’s no secret that I made curry specifically wanting to eat it with kimchi!
Ingredients- Canned ham 400g
- 1 Carrot
- 1 Onion
- 350g Curry vegetable mix (frozen or fresh)
- 2 Tbsp cooked peas
- 3 Tbsp peanut oil
- 5 Tbsp spicy curry powder
- 1 Tbsp Garam Masala (adds depth to the curry)
- 2 Tbsp turmeric powder (for thickening and color)
- 1.2L Water
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the vegetables for the curry. Using a pre-made curry vegetable mix makes it convenient. Chop the canned ham, onion, and carrot into large pieces. (Tip: Pre-chopping the ingredients the day before can save you time on cooking day!)
Step 2
Heat the peanut oil in a pan until hot. Add the prepared ham and all the vegetables, and sauté until lightly browned. It’s important to coat them with oil while stir-frying.
Step 3
Here are the ingredients that will add a special aroma and spiciness to this curry: spicy curry powder, Garam Masala for added flavor, and turmeric powder to achieve a thick consistency. (Tip: Turmeric powder also enhances the curry’s deep color and aids digestion.)
Step 4
Add the spicy curry powder and Garam Masala to the sautéed ham and vegetables. Stir-fry briefly to coat the ingredients and release their fragrance.
Step 5
Now, pour in 1.2L of water and bring to a boil over high heat. It’s okay if the sautéed ingredients aren’t fully cooked yet; they just need to be coated with oil or butter. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low.
Step 6
After the curry has simmered sufficiently, add the turmeric powder to achieve your desired thickness. (Tip: Adding more curry powder can make it too salty. Using turmeric powder helps maintain the flavor while thickening. You can also use a cornstarch slurry, but turmeric powder is recommended.) Stir well to prevent lumps and cook until it reaches a thick consistency.
Step 7
Your rich and fragrant canned ham curry is ready! You’ll notice a deep flavor and a gentle spiciness. The intense curry aroma will stimulate your appetite, making you crave rice and kimchi. The ham pairs wonderfully with the curry too.
Step 8
Add the cooked peas to the finished curry. Peas are best added at the very end to preserve their vibrant green color. Simply stir them in using the residual heat of the curry.
Step 9
Serve warm rice in a bowl, and generously ladle the canned ham curry over it. Your hearty canned ham curry rice is complete! Don’t forget to prepare some kimchi to go with it. After all, curry is best enjoyed with kimchi! While sweet pickled radishes are nice, kimchi is king for Koreans. 😊
