Main Ingredients
  • 3 Tbsp Doenjang (fermented soybean paste)
  • 2 cleaned frozen crabs
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1/2 zucchini
  • 1 onion
  • 1 stalk green onion

Broth Ingredients
  • 500ml water (approx. 2 cups)
  • 2 dried anchovies (deurized)
  • 2 pieces dried kelp (dashima)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

In a pot, combine 500ml of water, 2 dried anchovies, and 2 pieces of dried kelp. Boil for 10 minutes to create a flavorful broth. Once the broth is ready, remove the anchovies and kelp. Dissolve 3 tablespoons of doenjang in the clear broth. Finally, stir in 1 tablespoon of minced garlic to complete the doenjang base.

Step 2

Add the 2 cleaned frozen crabs to the doenjang broth. (Nowadays, pre-cleaned frozen crabs are available, which can make this step even easier!)

Step 3

Add the 1/2 zucchini, cut into bite-sized pieces, and the 1 onion to the pot. Adding vegetables will make the jjigae more substantial and enhance its flavor.

Step 4

Bring to a boil over high heat for about 10 minutes. As the jjigae starts to bubble vigorously, the characteristic savory aroma of crab doenjang jjigae will fill the air. Continue to simmer until the vegetables are tender and the crab turns a tempting red color.

Step 5

As the jjigae nears completion, add the 1 stalk of green onion, sliced diagonally, and simmer for just 1 more minute. The fresh, crisp aroma of the green onion will further elevate the jjigae’s taste.

Step 6

Let it simmer gently one last time to allow all the flavors to meld together perfectly.

Step 7

When fresh crab is added to doenjang jjigae, it creates a deeper, richer flavor than any other seasoning. Your delicious crab doenjang jjigae, with its harmonious blend of the crab’s refreshing taste and the doenjang’s savory depth, is now ready!

Step 8

Warm and refreshing soup is simply wonderful on a rainy day. This crab doenjang jjigae is incredibly delicious even when made simply. Give it a try!
