- 2 slices of cheese
- 2 dill pickles
- 1 knob of butter (for toasting)
Homemade Tartar Sauce Ingredients- 2 Tbsp finely minced onion
- 1 Tbsp finely minced dill pickle
- 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
- 4 Tbsp mayonnaise
- 1 Tbsp honey or corn syrup (for sweetness)
- 0.5 Tbsp mustard
- 1 pinch of salt
- A dash of freshly ground black pepper
- 2 Tbsp finely minced onion
- 1 Tbsp finely minced dill pickle
- 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
- 4 Tbsp mayonnaise
- 1 Tbsp honey or corn syrup (for sweetness)
- 0.5 Tbsp mustard
- 1 pinch of salt
- A dash of freshly ground black pepper
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Begin by finely mincing the onion and dill pickle, which are key components for the tartar sauce. Aim for a ratio of about 2 parts onion to 1 part pickle for a balanced flavor. If you prefer a tangier sauce, you can add a little more pickle.
Step 2
To mellow out the sharp bite of the raw onion, soak the minced onion in cold water for about 10-15 minutes. This step is crucial for a smoother flavor profile in your sauce. If you skip this, the onion’s strong aroma might make the sauce taste a bit pungent.
Step 3
After soaking, drain the minced onion and thoroughly squeeze out any excess water using a clean kitchen towel or cheesecloth. Removing as much moisture as possible will prevent the sauce from becoming watery.
Step 4
In a clean bowl, combine the drained minced onion with 1 Tbsp lemon juice, 4 Tbsp mayonnaise, 1 Tbsp honey or syrup, 0.5 Tbsp mustard, a pinch of salt, and a dash of pepper. Whisk everything together until well combined to create your delicious homemade tartar sauce.
Step 5
Slice the ripe tomato into approximately 1cm thick rounds and lay them out on a paper towel. Excess moisture from ingredients like tomatoes can make the bread soggy, so patting them dry is an important step for a crisp sandwich.
Step 6
Thinly slice the 2 dill pickles. These will add a refreshing tang that cuts through the richness of the salmon.
Step 7
Toast the bread slices until golden brown and crisp. For extra flavor, toast them in a pan with a knob of butter – this adds a wonderful richness. Alternatively, you can use a toaster.
Step 8
Once toasted, stand the bread slices up against each other slightly. Keeping them upright helps maintain their crispiness. Laying them flat can cause them to steam and become soggy from the fillings.
Step 9
Place a slice of cheese on one side of each toasted bread slice. The cheese acts as a tasty binder for the other ingredients.
Step 10
Layer the romaine lettuce leaves on top of the cheese, about 2 leaves per sandwich half. While generous amounts of lettuce add great texture, be mindful not to overstuff, as it can make wrapping the sandwich difficult.
Step 11
Generously spread a good amount of the prepared tartar sauce over the lettuce. Don’t be shy with the sauce; it’s a key flavor component!
Step 12
Arrange the patted-dry tomato slices on top of the sauce.
Step 13
Now, add a generous portion of the salmon fillet. The creamy texture and rich flavor of the salmon are the stars of this sandwich.
Step 14
Finally, add the sliced dill pickles over the salmon. Their bright, briny flavor complements the salmon beautifully.
Step 15
Carefully place the other slice of toasted bread on top to complete the sandwich.
Step 16
Gently press down on the sandwich to help the layers meld together, then wrap it tightly in plastic wrap. This helps everything hold its shape and makes slicing much easier.
Step 17
Let the wrapped sandwich rest for a moment to allow the ingredients to settle. Then, using a sharp knife, carefully cut the sandwich in half to reveal the beautiful layers. Your delicious homemade salmon sandwich is ready to enjoy!
