Easy & Delicious French Toast Recipe: Perfect for Using Up Leftover Bread!

Golden French Toast

Transform leftover bread into a delightful meal with this simple French toast recipe! It’s a fantastic way to create something new from what you already have. This recipe works wonderfully with any type of bread; I personally love using challah for its rich flavor, but classic sandwich bread (식빵) yields equally amazing results. It’s a go-to for a quick breakfast, brunch, or even a sweet treat.

Ingredients

  • 2-3 slices of bread (sandwich bread or any leftover bread)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 200ml milk
  • 10g butter

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

In a shallow rectangular dish or bowl, crack the 2 large eggs. Gently whisk them with a fork until the yolks and whites are just combined. Avoid over-whisking.

Step 2

Add the 1 tablespoon of sugar and 1 pinch of salt to the eggs. Pour in the 200ml of milk and whisk everything together until well combined and smooth. This creates the flavorful custard base for your French toast.

Step 3

Dip the 2-3 slices of bread into the egg and milk mixture, ensuring both sides are coated. Let the bread soak for about 1 hour, or until it has absorbed a good amount of the custard. Occasionally flip the bread to ensure even soaking. Adjust soaking time based on the thickness and type of bread.

Step 4

Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Add the 10g of butter and let it melt, coating the surface. Carefully place the soaked bread slices onto the hot skillet. Cook for about 1-2 minutes per side, until golden brown and slightly crispy. Cover the pan with a lid for the first minute or so on each side to help the inside cook through and become tender.

Step 5

Serve the French toast warm. Garnish with your favorite toppings such as fresh fruits, whipped cream, or a dusting of powdered sugar. A drizzle of maple syrup or honey is also highly recommended. Enjoy this delightful treat with a cup of coffee or a glass of milk!
