For the French Toast- Thick-cut bread (3cm thick) 2 slices
- Fresh eggs 2
- Milk 150ml
- Granulated sugar 1 Tbsp
- Sliced cheese 2 slices
- Butter, for cooking, as needed
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Let’s start by preparing the custard base for your French toast. In a bowl, crack two fresh eggs and whisk them together with 150ml of milk and 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar. Gently whisk until all ingredients are well combined and the mixture is smooth. You’ll know it’s ready when the sugar is fully dissolved and the surface has a slight sheen.
Step 2
For the best texture, use thick-cut bread, about 3cm (1.2 inches) thick. This thickness ensures the bread absorbs enough custard without becoming too soggy or falling apart. If you don’t have sandwich bread, you can also use French baguette or brioche for a delightful variation.
Step 3
Now, dip each slice of thick-cut bread into the prepared egg and milk mixture. Make sure to coat both sides thoroughly, allowing the bread to soak up the delicious custard.
Step 4
Patience is key here! Let the bread soak in the custard for about 5 to 10 minutes, or until it has absorbed the liquid sufficiently and feels delightfully moist. Ensure the custard seeps into the bread without making it overly soggy. This soaking time is crucial for a tender texture.
Step 5
Time to get cooking! Melt a generous amount of butter in a non-stick skillet over low heat. Once the butter is melted and fragrant, reduce the heat to the lowest setting. Cooking on low heat prevents the outside from burning before the inside is cooked through.
Step 6
Carefully place the soaked bread slices onto the low-heat skillet. Cook for at least 5 minutes per side, or until each side is a beautiful golden brown and perfectly cooked. The goal is a crispy exterior that gives way to a soft, custardy interior.
Step 7
Once cooked, transfer the warm French toast to a plate. Top with 1-2 slices of cheese, allowing it to melt slightly from the heat. For an extra touch of sweetness, you can dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with maple syrup. Fresh berries also make a wonderful accompaniment.
Step 8
Enjoy your homemade, deliciously tender French toast! Wishing you a wonderful and tasty meal today!
